I am one of those whose lives crossed paths with Bob years ago but literally just learned of his death today.

After many years of no connection at all, I was able to track Bob down over a year ago where we had two wonderful telephone visits walking down memory lane.

He was a great man in so many ways. As a young reporter and writer of editorials for a newspaper in Rosenberg, I opposed his first campaign for Congress. By his second campaign for the job, I was in his corner then and for the rest of his career which took so many good turns.

There is an abiding truth is that when two people meet and develop a respect for one another, that respect does not require constant communications.

The lesson that has been brought home to me today, however, is that if you have those friends in life whose paths have gone their separate direction, go renew it today before it is too late.

Bob was everything a public servant and public official should be. I am glad that 30 years after we first met that I had an opportunity to tell him how much I respected and admired his career.

The country could use some more young, dedicated, smart, and tough Bob Gammages today.

His was a life well-lived in service to others.

Bob and I shared a number of things: political views, being descendants of the original settlors of Texas, past attorneys, and an appreciation for family and friends. Bob lived a really good life. My deepest condolences to the family. The good simply go too soon, don't they?

Lynda, this will be a particularly difficult time of year for you and the children. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. Tomorrow I'll give thanks for having known Bob for 45 years. Every time I spoke with him, or we exchanged e-mails, he lifted my spirits. I miss him.
Love, Nic

I send my best to Bob's family-Bob attended the PIL program at Harvard Law school, were I had the chance to meet him-my mother worked at the PIL program for 25 years and Bob was so knid to her-I was a Boston area lawyer for 10 years and relocated to Sarasota, FL in 2000-I was recently elected to the Circuit Court bench in Sarasota and start my judidcial duties in January-Bob was a inspiration to me and many others-as a yankee from the Northeast,Bob showed my Mom, Nancy Lakin and all the folks at Harvard great respect-thanks for all kindness Bob, from your friends in Boston and Sarasota, FL

To this day, there is nothing for which I am more proud, humbled and honored than to say that I was a member of Bob's congressional staff in the late 70's. He was a caring, honest, and thoughtful Congressman, able and WILLING to work with those on both sides of the aisle to make a real difference in the lives of his constituents and the rest of the country. He was also an incredible teacher and I was so lucky to be his student then and later when he was on the bench in Austin....His humor, smile, warmth, and friendship will be missed......
