Joe-Kubert-Obituary

Joe Kubert

Obituary

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Joe Kubert, a groundbreaking comic artist and educator, has died at 85.

Kubert, who co-created DC Comics' iconic Sgt. Rock character and Tor, and reinvigorated Hawkman, died Sunday, according to The Kubert School, which he founded in 1976 with his wife to train illustrators and artists.

Kubert is closely tied to war comics thanks to Sgt. Rock and his fabled Easy Company, along with the strip "Tales of the Green Beret." He worked on a manual for the U.S. Army on how to fix Humvees.

His work was also poignant. "Yossel April 19, 1943," explored the Warsaw Ghetto uprising in World War II and what his life would have been if his parents did not emigrate from Poland to the United States when he was a baby.

Not sure what to say?

Great artist Enemy Ace and Sgt. Rock in particular. You should take your place right beside Jack Kirby as possibly the best ever.

My thanks to Joe, for all of the wonderful moments he has provided to me via his incredible narrative work. I'm thrilled that I was able to finally meet him at the last C2E2 convention that he made an appearance at in Chicago. Such a kind, gracious man. Thank you for everything.

The Kubert family we are so sorry about you loss. And these are times that we are at a loss. But never alone the Almighty God is with us. And we fine protections and he tell us how. Isaiah 43:13 and i have found comfort in this. Soon now all us will welcome back our love ones Matthew 5:5

I only had one chance to meet Joe. I dragged my youngest daughter to his school during a trip to visit my mom in D.C. I waited for him to come back from lunch and begged him to sign some of the books I had brought with me. He was very gracious. I will always remember this moment. It saddens me greatly to hear of his passing.

I go to Saturday Classes at the school...Saw him once there Joe Thank you for creating the best school in the world. RIP

I never had the honor of meeting Joe Kubert personally, but I pass my upmost sincere condolences to his family and look forward to attending his school. We know he'll live on not only in his works and loved ones, but through the students who were fortunate enough to learn under him.

Adam, Andy, David and the Kubert family,
Unfortunately I was out of state and did not hear about Joe's passing until my return. I regret not having attended his services, my deepest sympathy to the family. He was one of the greatest men I'd ever known and had changed MY life completely. He'll be missed by many.

I had the pleasure of meeting Joe Kubert as a student in his school. He was always very kind, a consumate professional who loved what he did, and he always had his door open to exchange opinions or to give you a Master class. Joe, thank you for teaching me what it meant to be a professional.
Rest in peace
