Steve Shagan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 9, 2015.
Steve Shagan, a novelist, producer and screenwriter known best for writing the screenplay for the 1973 film "Save the Tiger," has died, according to multiple news reports. He was 88.

Shagan died Nov. 30 at his Los Angeles home. No cause of death has been announced.

Shagan, who also co-produced "Save the Tiger," won an Academy Award nomination for best original screenplay. "Save the Tiger," which was adapted for film from his first novel by the same name, also won an award from the Writers Guild of America.

After penning the novel "City of Angels" as well as the screenplay for "Hustle," Shagan wrote the screenplay for "Voyage of the Damned." In all, he wrote eight novels.

During the late-1960s, he produced a number of "Tarzan" films as well as episodes of the "Tarzan" television series.

In a 1982 Knight-Ridder newspaper interview, Shagan discussed his craft.

"When you write a novel," he said, "there's nothing between you and the audience. When you write a film, there's a whole army between you and the audience. Not that I'll give it up. I get a tremendous kick out of seeing a character I've created up on the screen."

Steve Shagan and I met in Ocho Rios Jamaica in 1986, at that time I was not aware he was an accomplished writer. We became friends right away. Steve,Betty, myself and my wife went on to share some of the best times of my life in the years to come. Writing this now brings tears to my eyes for one of the kindest, smartest and funniest men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. God bless you both

Both Steve and Betty were very kind to me. I spent many happy hours at their house meeting other nice, creative people. Betty and I went shopping and she always gave me a signed copy of Steve's latest book. They were both wonderful people and it is truly a great loss not having them here anymore.

Steve and I met in 1975, when I moved from New York to Los Angeles to be West Coast editor for Millimeter Magazine. One of my first interviews was with Steve. He was direct, feisty, loyal, outspoken and wickedly smart. He and Betty were unfailingly gracious and I felt vey privileged to be their friend. Even now I can still hear his gruff, Brooklyn-inflected voice. And I can remember almost verbatim his words of wise council. The love that Betty and Steve had for each other was unconditional and they both always "lived where they spoke." There was no disconnect between what they believed in and how they lived their life. They were the yardstick by which I measured my own conduct and commitment. Than you, Steve (and Betty) for your affection, graciousness and example.

Steve Shegan was a talented man who knew how to convey words into a novel, and turn that novel into an adventure for his audience to enjoy. Good producer with a great imagination. My sincere condolences to his closest friends and relatives. I understand that loosing a love one is one of the most difficult things we can experience in life...however, our Heavenly Father understands your circumstances and He can help you endure - May you be granted the comfort and the strength that God excels to those who mourn. Please accept my sincere sympathy...
