What can I say about Derek Curtis Roosa, Well he had a heart of gold, he always knew what to do to make someone smile, he loved everyone..Especially his family,friends and classmates. I will always remember him as a friend. He was such a great guy to everyone, he always made you laugh when you'd least expect it. He never shyed away from challenges he faced, or hurdles in his life he saw that he had to overcome. Like in football,wrestling, or any other sport he played in. He always gave it his best, he knew that's all he could do was try to be his best when it was required of him. He had the best outlook on life, after high school he went to Stevens Point University to become a history teacher, which surprised me. I told him "Derek, I'm proud of you, always become something you know you will always love and be good at. And promise me you wont give up, no matter the fight." He told me "Thanks, i appreciate it, and i wont." Which made me smile. I will miss him dearly,as his family,friends and classmates will. But I dont wanna cry, because i know some day i will meet him again,like we all must. So to his family,friends and class mates..Dont cry...I know its hard right now, but remember this..Derek is always close. He's in your hearts, and will never leave you. You will see him again. This past month and a half has been one of the best and craziest times I have ever had. There was never a dull moment when I was with or around Derek. I was his neighbor in the apartments we lived in and whether it was a two in the morning wake up call to make some food, or just a good talk or movie during the evening or day, I would always look forward to his company. Derek was a genuinely nice guy who never complained and always had a smile on his face. He always made me look forward to coming home to see him. It's hard to believe that life can end so suddenly to the people we care so much about. Derek has impacted so many lives, mine included, and it is going to be very hard without him, but I know he is looking down on us from a better place and that he will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace Derek Roosa, my thoughts and prayers go out to your family. I am very sorry for the loss of your son and brother was truly one of a kind.

He touched so many lives and made such an impact on them, as noted by the letters left in his honor...he left us too soon, but he will live with us forever. I can't express enough how much love I have for you, Kari and Jordan...and how deeply I am, and have been, impacted by all of the events from the past few days. I love you and so proud to call you my brother!

I didn't know Derek but I am a friend of his aunt Cheryl. I just had to reach out and tell you how very sorry I am for our loss. I am so sorry for your loss. Derek was such a great friend to my daughter Lauren Nelsen (UWSP). I had the opportunity to meet Derek (who I heard so much about) when he helped Lauren and I move her furniture into her apartment on a very hot summer day. He was such a huge help. We had lunch together and had such a great time. I fell in love with him. I was so glad that Lauren had such a wonderful friend who look out for her. He will be greatly missed.
