Dear Bette -- You have our deepest sympathy. Janet and I were so touched by this loving obituary. We wish we had had the chance to get to know Dick. In the few times we had with him, we sensed a warmth that must have brought you years of happiness. We look forward to seeing you soon.
being Rich's "baby sister" there are many things I remember: the canary "lollipop" he gave me for Xmas, when he brought Bette home & she was a wiz at monopoly. Being in their wedding. I'll miss you Rich. JIll
The Coach was a leader of boys and young men. He was intensely committed to all of us, and I can especially remember, like it was yesterday, when he focused that intensity on me. Thanks for all you did for us, Coach Nuzum. Fraser McAlpine MVCDS '71.

His personality affected everyone around him in a positive way. He was a true friend and genuinely good person.
We have felt very fortunate to call you and Dick our friends. Dick's genuine interest in people always touched us deeply. He made everyone feel important and special and he will be greatly missed. Dick Nuzum will never ever be forgotten he has touched so many lives! He always had kind words to say and could brighten my day as soon as I saw or talked to him. His smile was contagious. His phone calls, letters, gifts and just his visits made me feel so special! I have so many memories of him that will last a life time. Bette and family thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing him with me. I know we are so very blessed for having Dick Nuzum in our lives. Love and prayers to your family!
To the entire Nuzum family,
My prayers and sympathy are with you on the passing of 'Coach' Nuzum as many of us at Maumee Valley knew him. Coach truly was an inspiration to us both as athletes and as citizens. He will truly be missed. God bless you and give you comfort at this time.
I feel blessed to have shared just a part of Dick's life and his kindnesses. What a wonderful legacy he has given the family. May you cherish the many memories of a good man. Louise Morgan
Bette, Rich, Tom, and David, the whole Fouke family is so saddened by Dick's death, way too young. What a lovely, smart, and genuine man he was. We feel blessed to have had him as a friend as he was indeed a special person. But you know that already. All of us are thinking of you and send you all our sympathy and, of course, our love. Affectionately, Becky
Everyone in our family has been greatly honored to have known Dick and tremendously fortunate to have been able to tell him so over the past Christmas Holiday. The many teachers in our family have a favorite quote from Will Durant: "Educators should be chosen not merely for their special qualifications, but more for their personality and their character, because we teach more by what we are than by what we teach." By those standards, Dick was no less than a giant.

"Coach" taught me what it meant to strive for something excellent as a team member, and as an individual. Under his leadership, I experienced what it was like to have an "undefeated" season, as well as a season where wins were hard to come by; through it all, I learned to play with sportsmanship, and class - may God bless the family;

I am very sorry to hear of OUR loss. Coach was a great person. He was inspirational to all who were lucky enough to get to spend time with him. One of my fondest memories of MVCDS was my trips with him to the barbershop on game day to get his buzz cut cleaned up. He would sit in one chair while I sat in the next and we went over our defensive game plane per situation. He gave me respect and confidence and I am very proud to have had him as my coach. He inspired me to go into education and coaching. I wanted to be like him in that I wanted my kids to excel because they loved me as I had loved him as a coach. MVCDS 1970
Mr. Nuzum inspires me to be the kind of educator that is dedicated not only to teaching but also the intangibles. His continued attention to and celebration of students was not duplicated by any teacher I ever encountered.
My son and daughter both had Mr. Nuzum for science at MICDS Joe was class of 98 and Katherine class of 07. Joe says he became a science teacher due to his teaching. Great teachers are so special!
Aunt Bette my heartfelt condolences to you Rich, Tom, and David. Some of my fondest memories of Uncle Rich were the warm summers at Sugar Camp. I wish I could accompany my mother and take part in celebrating Uncle Rich. You're in my prayers.
My sympathy is with you at this sad time.

Mr Nuzum was such a special teacher and mentor to so many young students. The time, attention and care he gave each and every one of his students was well beyond the call of duty! He never quit being that person when the school day was over, but instead would take the time to call each and every student on the team before a big game to wish them the best. All of the handwritten notes and phone calls through the years meant so much to our family. The world would be a much better place if there were more people who reached out and gave others so much of themselves. Our world and the community at MICDS was certainly a better place thanks to him!
Our deepest sympathis to Bette and his family. Dick, you will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
Let's see, where to start: push-ups in the hallway! Flying down the ladder at football games to grab someone's face mask and give them "instructions." The walk, the walk, the walk - could spot him coming (or going) from a mile away. The laugh. The head-shaking. The great joy he wore on his face when a job was well done. Michigan School for the Deaf - overnight, away games! Amazing, amazing man!
My heartfelt condolences for the Nuzum family. Mr. Nuzum was an unforgettable teacher, mentor and guide for young minds. I will never forget his incredible drive to maintain close contact with myself and other students through many heartfelt letters. He will be missed, but I know his lessons will live in his students.
Bette and family,
We have all lost a treasure, a true genuine soul, whose life was a continuing testimony to how we can influence young people by example and the power of hope for all pf us. He was an inspiring person and we all in our own way loved him.
Our deepest sympathy to you and your family.
To the Nuzum family:
I will always remember Mr. Nuzum for his incredible spirit, love of learning and love for his students. We couldn't have asked for a better teacher or role model. Thank you for sharing him with us. He will be greatly missed.
My condolences to all the Nuzums and Gretchen who was my connection to the Nuzum family. When the Class of 1950 shares their memories, Gret always has a place. Plus Dr. Nuzum was my mother's physician and probably mine as a newborn. A great name and it is great to read how Dick carried on a great reputation. Tom Carlson, Class of 1950
Dick and I were colleagues when he was at the Maumee Valley Country Day School and became very close friends during his tenure at that school. He was an extraordinary person, an exceptinal teacher and the kids just totally loved him. And adding flavor to that wonderful career was his beautiful family. He will be missed.
Dear Bette and Family,
I still have fond and frequent memories
of when you lived across the street on Meadowhill Ct. Treasured memories.
Sincere Sympathy in your loss of Dick.
May God grant all the blessings you need.
Dear Betty and family,
Bruce and I wish to send our deepest sympathies to you and the boys. It was such a pleasure working with Dick at MVCDS. He was a great coach, athletic Director, friend and co-worker. He was a wonderful coach and was revered by all of his students. Our love to all of you. Joan and Bruce
My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Mr Nuzum was a very special person who influenced everyone he met. I always looked forward to him greeting me at Theraplus and he made me smile even when I wasn't in a smiling mood. Mrs Nuzum and Tom you have been in my thoughts since I heard of your loss.
Tom and Family,
I am very sorry for your loss and will keep you in my prayers.
Denise Kollenberg (patient of Tom)

Dick was a dear colleague and friend. He touched so many lives with his kindness and he always had a positive attitude. I admired and respected him trememdously. I'll never forgot my first year at MICDS when I entered my room for the first day and there was a rose, from Bette's beautiful garden, awaiting me from Dick. I and others looked forward and were blessed by his act of caring and bringing a smile and feeling loved on those first days of school. He was alway there as a friend with words of encouragement. What a gentleman and best colleague anyone could ever be fortunate to have had in life. He was a role model for teachers, an inspiration for his students in his passion for teaching and coaching, and a wonderful family man. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. Our prayers to Bette and the family.
Dear Bette and the entire Nuzum family,
Dick was a wonderful, caring and thoughtful man. I will never forget our days together teaching and coaching. Dick was always there with a kind word. I always looked forward to the postcards and the end of the year school malts that Dick served up for his students and the faculty. What a wonderful man!

'Bets a malt?!... Wins a malt!'
Dear Bette, Rich, Tom, David, and your precious families,
Our family has been touched by our dear friend Dick and his loving and kind family in so many ways. We will always hold closely the fun days of wrestling and watching our sons grow into talented and caring young men. Life is a precious gift, and with this gift, comes eternal life with our Heavenly Father. Bette, may it give you and your family peace and comfort that Dick adored you all. We loved when he spoke of his grandchildren and he would beam with pride. Dick is a true testimony of how one's life can have a positive effect on others. His integrity, love, friendship, passion, and joy radiated to all that met him. Dick will be greatly missed and will forever be a part of our hearts. Our prayers, sympathy, love, and friendship are with you all.
Mr Nuzum made MICDS a caring place and he tried to reach each of us. Thanks for the memories. Lauren,Tommy, Annie Brummett and Wendy Timm
Our deepest sympathy. I do not believe I have ever seen one teacher affect so many young men and women in such a positive way as Dick did. You will always be loved and missed. Rest in peace.
