Being a huge Cardinal fan growing up in Wyoming, I loved listening to the night games as a teenager in the 70s. After the game Jim White would come on with his At Your Service show, and I would listen to that. I always thought KMOX was the greatest radio station on earth. How could one station have so many incredible personalities. What a great time that was for radio; much better than the political based stuff AM radio bombards you with today.

All these years later, I still remember Jim's words. I fit one of his You can't fix stupid comments. I ended up on his Friday night Dateline STL... stupid teenager that I was I got married 6 weeks later. I earned that You can't fix stupid I still tell people making bad decisions that to this day.
I miss Jim and everything he stood for, the endless nights of entertainment and all these years later I hope he's had many boating journies by now!

I listened to Jim until I moved from the area in 1982, and enjoyed every minute. I've always regretted not being able to find radio announcers of his quality anywhere else. I'm sorry to hear of his death.

I remember back when I was a full time musician. Late at night after a gig, what did several of us in varous bands listen to . . . no, not some hot music station. We listened to Jim White. With KMOX's reach, you could listen to him just about anywhere in the country, so no matter where we were, you had a little slice of home right at your fingertips. You will be missed Big Bumper.

I used to drive for a living and I can`t tell you how many times the bumper kept me entertained on the over night drives. I am so glad that you had the chance to "retire to something" and cruise your ship up and down the mississippi bumper. You are something tha went bump in the night and always will in my memories. Rest in Peace

To Jim's Family

I am Jim's first cousin Barbara White Skodak from Greensburg, Pa. I have not seen Jim since 1969. We are very saddened to hear of Jim's passing. We would like to send our most sincere condolences to your family.

Our hearts go out to Pat, Heidi, Holly and their families. Heidi and I became friends in graduate school despite our 13-year age difference. (Don't remind me, Heidi, when I'm 60 you'll be 47!) Through our friendship, Heidi shared her lovely parents Jim and Pat. KMOX Radio listeners think of "The Big Bumper" as "theirs," we just think of Jim as Heidi's dad. May all the wonderful memories sustain you during this time of sorrow. Sincerely, Carol (Keller) & Fred Michaelis

Jim White is responsible for my husband and me quitting smoking! One night back in late 1989, he invited callers who were smokers to call in and talk about the habit. I particularly remember one woman who called in with very labored breathing and breathing only possible using an oxygen tank. She talked about her years of smoking and then pain and health problems. We felt FOR her but also took her message to heart and that night was the last night we ever smoked. He was a crank and a curmudgeon with very fixed ideas, but he was OUR crank and curmudgeon and we were attached to him. We didn't LOVE him the way we loved Jack Carney, and whose passing we still grieve, but we are radio lovers and he was part of a long, wonderful (now gone - it's all Limbaugh, all the time) St. Louis radio tradition. Jack Carney, and all his troupe of players, the Cardinals, and so many rich memories. We listened to KMOX over the years from our various homes over the years, from Bowling Green, KY, Springfield, IL, West Michigan and east central Illinois So long, Jim White.

My biggest regret is that podcasts didn't exist when Jim White went bump in the night. I'd have saved myself from a lot of sleep-deprived evenings, and my parents from a lot of aggravation from telling me to turn off the radio and go to sleep.

I went to school (teacher) many days so tired because I just couldn't turn the radio off. I have walked off a lot of pounds waiting for Jim to come on, then putting on my head phones and out the door walking my neighborhood during the summers listening to Jim. Thanks for the education =)..

Jim White put me to sleep many nights while living in O'Fallon, Il. My husband was working the middle shifts and Mr. White made my eveings go by a lot faster with his stories and the adventures he had with his boat down the Mississippi. Thank you for making my nights a little brighter
My prayers ans sympathy got out to his family.

I grew up in Atlanta and moved to St. Louis in 1992. My Aunt who lived in Atlanta told me she listened to Jim every night and just loved him. I will always remember how much he loved boating and reading about his adventure when he cruised his boat down mississippi, up the intercoastal waterway and back through the canals to St. Louis. Wonderful memories.

While growing up in St Louis in the 70's and 80's I listened to Mr White's show nightly. I even called him one night in 1984 about my college plans. He was a St Louis institution and I am greatful KMOX had him for 30 years. God bless you and your family.

My husband and I listened to Jim White for all the years he was on KMOX We enjoyed his off handed humor, his teasing silly callers and even his way of handling rude people. Some times we would even laugh out loud at his antics Im so sorry to hear of your loss and I do know the grief and feelings encountered when losing a spouse. I have been a widow for six years now, It is what it is... losing a spouse is very difficult. Your family is in my prayers and I hope you know how many lives Jim tiouched with his kindness and good listening may God bless you Jan High Ridge Mo

To the family of Mr. White, I offer my sympathy. I just wanted you to know the joy Jim brought to my dear sweet mom. She used to listen to him every night. Mom passed away several years ago. I forgot about her late night listening sessions with Jim until I saw he had recently passed away. I am trully sorry for your loss.

September 5, 2009

Jim and I spent many a night in Kelly's Korner solving world problems while he waited for the Cardinal game to end. He would then head over to KMOX to do an abbreviated show. As a fellow transplanted Pennsylvanian I always enjoyed our chats and can never remember him speaking ill of anyone.

God bless - may he rest in peace.

Jim and I were friends from his KDKA days in Pittsburgh and spent some time on the Allegheny river there. He was the 'real deal' as they say. Great character and honesty plus he loved his profession. Another of my friends has passed to the other shore. No doubt Jim was at the helm in the voyage. My heart goes out to you, Pat.

While I didn't know Mr. White (Jim), I did enjoy his over the air contributions. Each of us touches many lives, and leaves our mark when we exit this life, and Jim touched many lives - his mark made the world a little better for his having been here.

I never met Jim in person but he became a friend to me on nights while driving. I am an over the road truck driver and I just happened to hear Jim one night on the air. I was able to talk to him a few times and he became a great friend to ride along with me on the road. To his family you have my prayers and thoughts and I know that Jim is in a better place but it is our loss. I hope Jim enjoyed the retirement he talked about on KMOX. Just like Jack Buck, he was special to alot of us .

My parents were avid fans of Jim White on KMOX and I grew up listening to him, Jack Carney and Miz Blue. He and I shared a passion for "belly bombers". I was a lot smarter than other children in my class because I was always up on current events. Jim White was my tutor.

Pat, Heidi & Holly, I was quite sad when my Dad informed me of Jim's passing. Please accept my heartfelt condolences for your loss. I have such fond memories of all of you from growing up on Wieland Dr. I particularly remember the block parties on the circle in front of your house on the 4th of July, and Jim shooting off firecrackers in your mailbox. I also remember his all too cool Nissan 240Z. He will be missed and fondly remembered.

As a 52 year old man who happily listened to Mr White and Jack Warnick in the early 1970s when I was a high school student at Hazelwood, I am saddened by Mr White's passing. I was the Captain of our Football team, on the Yearbook and Newspaper staffs...President of the Pep Club... involved in many other clubs and activities. While my "cool" friends listened to KSHE and KIRL, as much as I had a passion for music and had a career directly tied to music...I found KMOX to be an excellent study partner. After listening to the Cardinals or Blues...I knew I had some good listening to do as I finished homework or before falling asleep.
Mr White was an unknowingly close and constant friend of my younger years who has departed for a station that has a far greater listening audience than even the Mighty MOX! My life is richer for the entertainment and insight he provided me those many years!

Pat, Heidi, and Holly,

I'm so saddened to hear about Jim's passing. I never heard him on the radio, but knew him as the father of my college roommate. On those weekend visits to St. Louis, Heidi's dad would always tease us and challenge our thinking on various topics. He'll be missed by many.

I was listening to Jim from the very
beginning. He provided many a memorable
memories. In 2006 when I met George
Noory in Joshua Tree, Ca. we briefly
talked about the Cardinals, and Tigers. I wish I had mentioned that my
two fondest memories of St. Louis were
growing up in Jefferson Barracks, and
listening to the great Jim White.

For many years, I remember my mom and dad make preparations for bed. The last thing my mom did was turn on her little black transistor radio she bought at Kresge's (Hampton Village), so she could listen to you, Mr. White as she drifted off to sleep. She once said, "He let's me know everything is right with the world." Mr. White...my mom and dad loved you (Dad passed in 1994 and Mom passed in 2006), I loved you and God loves you! Thanks for the memories, Mr. White!

PS...tell Bob Hardy, Jack Buck and Jack Carney hello from all of us!

It was in 1983 that I had a chance to interview Mr. White for the Belleville East school newspaper. Not many 16 year old kids were hip to the Big Bumper but I was. My father drove me over to #1 Memorial Drive in the middle of the night so I could interview one of my broadcasting heros. At one point he looked at me and very calmly said "just a minute son" and then hit a button and was speaking to the entire country. I was awe struck. I listened most everynight until his retirement. I was lucky enough to work in the St. Louis radio market for a few years on the air and it was a meeting with Jim White and listening to the rest of the glourious KMOX staff that I tried to pay homage to each time I stepped behing the microphone. Reast easy Mr. White and for the sake of saying....we have already established how Jim is feeling and I'm sure he is doing just fine!

God speed Big Bumper,

Pat, I am thinking about you -- as I often do! My sympathy goes out to you and your family. Have never forgotten when you invited teacher Kay & friends to visit you and Jim on the boat. And when Jim came home the great stories he had for us about his evenings with the blue hairs.
What a kind man, what an amzing impact he had on so many lives! What a great team you made!

Pat--I just could not believe the phone call that Heidi was kind enough to make--I still find if so hard to assimilate. I've lost a true friend of over 30 years. I don't know where to start on all the good times we had--boating--Dayton--the thrill of a new restaurant--the list could go on and on. In my radio room I have two momentos that Jim gave me when you moved--a carved sign that says You Can't fix Stupid and a picture of wet cat saying "Don't tell me what kind of day to have. Jean and I will keep your family in our thoughts and prayers.

Jim, you brought light and life to my life for many years. You were family, friend, joy, thought, brilliance, and a pal. You sparked my imaginationand my mind. And you were so knowable. Every Thankgiving I recall your popcorn exploding in gthe turkey story. My Christmases were more because I'd think about you and your family stories. I even ate Spam (once) because you waxed so intently on its pleasures. Thanks for all the years, except the last few, when your on-air style became too heavy-handed for me.

I hope someone puts out a DVD of your earlier shows. I need your voice and intellect and no non-sense personality in my life. You knew everything! Amazing. Thanks for the memories.

Pat, sure sorry to hear about Jim, we had great times up on Lumpy Island. Pat and I often talk about the two of you and like the 4th of July weekend when he would bring up all those fireworksw and the one year when the Delta Queen stopped in the river to watch them, and the times Jim and I would go fishing, but would never catch anything, there is so many good times that we remember. Our boat the Tranquility was just up from yours at Woodland Harbor. There are so many times we can recall of the good times we had with your family and Peggy would have your girls to play with up there, I could go on forever. If you ever get into St. Louis, we are in the phone book, give us a call. Tell the girls we are sorry they lost their great dad.

I am so sorry that we have lost a great man not only in life but in the radio airwaves. My husband and I would fall asleep listening to him. Several times when my husband got up for a bathroom break there would be something Jim would be speaking about and he listened to the whole thing and often calling Jim to voice his opinion.

Many sympathies to the family as I know they have lost a huge whole in their family.

Moved to Chicago 45 years ago but, blessedly, KMOX sounded out bright each night up here in the Windy City. Jim was the perfect late night companion, gentle, reflective, hearty, a great story teller. I particularly loved him on snowy nights in St. Louis when he sort of gathered the entire city and country together under a warm, comfy blanket and saw everyone through the dark. When it came to difficult or confused callers he was at his best, winking with his audience as he handled the moments with class.

My favorite Jim White saying: "Save me from the good people." And the way he did both Dateline St. Louis and the Friday Night Fracas.

It's so hard to find great talent like that any more, and it's a shame. Thanks for everything Jim. My deepest sympathies to the family, and here's hoping he's cruising down the river once again!

As a fifty something native St. Louisan, I grew up with "the man who goes bump in the night." From the age of 15 on, I never went to bed at night without Jim's soothing voice, wit, and wisdom...even while away at college. Cardinal baseball and Jim White on KMOX. It didn't get better than that. Thank you for so many great memories. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family and friends.

Rest in Peace dear Jim White. You are an the "real deal" and your spirit always jumped out on the airwaves! When I moved up to Chicago land in 1990, I was always so excited when KMOX came booming in on those cold, crisp nights and the voice of Jim came through the crackling of the radio. RIP Jim - your radio program in the late 70's was my favourite and it kept me going while I worked at night. - Bill Zimmerly, KA0YKO

Our deepest sympathies to the White family. My wife and I will miss Jim, a fellow "ham" radio operator as well as an outstanding professional. It was a pleasure to work with him years ago. He was a good friend.

Jim White had the unique ability to make us think and be entertained at the same time. The day he retired from KMOX was a sad one for me because after I got out of college and went to work, most of my shifts were in his well-known time slot. His classic phrase to describe idiots which he coined "You can't fix stupid" is absolutely timeless. St. Louis has lost a treasure with Mr. White's passing. I send my deepest condolences to the White family and may Christ's Peace Be With You.
