Just read the news in the Miamian-- knew John at MU well and it was very sad to read of his passing, esp. in such a tragic way... my deepest condolences to family and friends. Judy Friedman

Elena: I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your brother. We gathered at the reunion this past weekend and heard the news. You were missed by all of us. I hope that you have such fond memories of your brother and smile every moment that you think of him! You are in my thoughts! Love Jeanette Borsh Eichenlaub

I just heard of the tragic passing of my old friend, Johnny.

He touched many lives with his good looks, charm, quick, and at times caustic wit, his intellectual brilliance, creativity, and of course, his love.

I was fortunate to know him and room with him in his college undergrad years, back when he thought he was Keith Richards, and before he became "respectable."

I can still see the curly haired Greek man-child, with his hollow body Gibson strapped across his shoulder. The stereo blaring. His pick between his teeth. His amplifier turned up - always just a little louder than the stereo - so he could hear his own guitar playing clearly.

It didn't matter if you couldn't hear yourself think. He hardly ever turned it down to talk with you, choosing instead to shout over the din, stopping now and then to jam along when he just couldn't help himself.

The crazy thing was that everyone tolerated him. After all, he was Johnny, he was "gifted" and he was fun.

Johnny was a " light" in many lives, mine included. I will always remember the time we shared together, and our creative collaborations.

We hadn't "touched base" in over 20 years. But Johnny "reached out" by phone a couple of times recently, mostly to talk about the trials and travails of "getting older." The last time we talked was an early December afternoon when he had just had "enough" for the day…

For some reason I thought I'd be talking to him a lot more in the future…

My heart goes out to Mary Beth, Rosemary, Elena and all of us who knew and loved John.

May he rest in peace. May the rest of us find it, too.

Love you John.

I'm so sorry about John's death. He quickly became one of my best friends back in Baton Rouge in the late '80's. Even when he moved to St. Louis, we saw each other 3 or 4 times a year. So much of his personality rubbed off on me, and now that he is gone, part of me is gone. There was no one like John! What a great friend of 27 years!
