Special Forces Warrant Officer, Joseph Lee Schiro, an American hero, a devoted father, son, brother and husband, was killed in action on October 6th, 2012. He was killed by enemy forces during direct ground combat while serving as part of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
Joseph was a 27-year-old native of Coral Springs, Florida. He lived a life full of accomplishments and selflessness. His triumphs as an athlete, such as being ranked third in the nation as a cyclist during his teen years, were impressive. He was most respected for his intellect and character. He possessed a unique ability to analyze complex problems in the most challenging environments, while simultaneously executing the solutions. Throughout life he excelled in tasks broadly varied, from being a Mensa alum to serving forward of the frontlines during multiple combat tours with Special Forces. He lived with a character that spanned generations. He was the type of man seasoned veteran's salute and children respect. Joe's only limitation in life proved to be the amount of time he had to serve the world. His proudest accomplishments were those involving his children.
In Joe's passing the nation has lost a great treasure. His family has lost a great father, son, brother and husband. His community has lost a great neighbor and the brotherhood of Special Forces has lost a great mentor, leader, and friend.
His military education includes U.S. Army Airborne School, Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape School, Warrior Leaders Course, Advanced Leaders Course, Modern Army Combatives Level One, Special Forces Intelligence Sergeant's Course, Advanced Special Operations Techniques Course, Special Forces Warrant Officer Certification Course, Special Forces Detachment Leader's Course, and the Special Forces Qualification Course.
His military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (3), the Meritorious Service Medal, the Purple Heart Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (2), the Army Achievement Medal (2), the Army Good Conduct Medal (2), the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with 3 Campaign Stars, the Iraq Campaign Medal with 2 Campaign Stars, the Army Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, the Parachutist Badge, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Special Forces Tab.
Joseph is survived by his wife, Diana Schiro; his sons, Joseph Taylor and Nathaniel Lee; and daughter, Caroline Grace. He is also survived by his sister, Stephanie and loving parents, Holly and Joseph.
Services will be held 2 p.m., on Monday, October 15, 2012 at Christ Fellowship Church, Royal Palm Beach. Following service, Special Forces Warrant Officer Joseph Lee Schiro, will be honorable laid to rest in South Florida National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests friends send donations to St Jude's Children's Hospital, or make donations to the following site for the children of Joseph: Children's Trust Fund, or cut and paste the following URL into your web browser. https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=SYKYH9Y8SQUG2

Holly and Joey, thank you for giving this Nation a very special person. Diana, I noticed at your
wedding that Joseph was a loving person to you, and later a great father to your children.
You're truly blessed.
The author Maya Angelou once said, “That it is not what you do for a person, but how you make them feel.”
Joseph was that kind of person. He made you feel good just by being in his presence. He was the best and the brightest. He was a leader, with all the qualities of courage, in the face of danger, and determination to get the job done and done right. He would stand up for what is right regardless of the consequences. You see, it wasn't about Joseph, it was about others. He would protect and defend the defenseless, and give aid to the helpless.
Those, whom he touched and knew him well, will never forget him. Joseph's dream of a better America will always live on.
Joseph never said why; Joseph dreamed things and said why not.
In John 14:2 Jesus said, “There are many rooms in my Father's house and I am going there to prepare a place for you.”
No one could ever imagine what God has prepared for those who love him. Because someday, we will be there together to meet our maker.
Joseph would have wanted us to move forward. To be kind, respectful, caring, and generous to others, and to help those who are in need of help.
Because in this nation of ours, “God's work here on earth must truly be our own”.
Thank you Joseph for your service, and your ultimate sacrifice to our nation. And God's speed to your journey home.

Dear America
My fellow Americans, I've something to share.
Something of which you should be made well aware
I'm sure you now know of those soldiers who fight.
Even now, to ensure we sleep safely at night
And you've probably offered a prayer for those men
When you've seen yellow ribbons, or watched CNN But I want to inform you of what you don't know
A side of this matter the news doesn't show
Allow me to tell you some things about one
Who fights now with others to get the job done
With great pride and honor he solemnly swore
To guard and defend what this nation stands for
The cost would be high, and this he understood
So if asked to give his life for freedom, he would
Though months of hard training have taken a toll
On his physical frame, they have not touched his soul
Throughout, he's maintained a nobler stance
Than could be expected in his circumstance
Long days in the field, tired, cold, underfed
Desiring warm showers and comfortable beds
Have served to expose the true man inside
A man of integrity, virtue, and pride
He chose not to grumble, complain, or protest
But rather, in all things, contribute his best
He's willing and ready, when duty commands
With no hesitation, to meet such demands
When told he would soon be deployed to Iraq
He stepped on that plane without looking back
Away from his loved ones, he aches from the strain
Yet presses on, knowing such love will remain
While loyally serving amidst looming harm
He always insists there's no need for alarm
His life is secure; for God is his guide
And in times of combat, the Lord's by his side
Despite the discomforts and dangers he's faced
His sense of devotion has not been erased
His speech is not boastful, despite all he's done
Humility clings on to victories won
One might not discover, without being told
The honor embodied in this heart of gold
All this I impart so you may be aware
That such men have chosen your burdens to bear
You're so blessed, America, to have men like Joe
Who risk their own lives to save those they don't know
Rest assured and in peace, treasured Land of the Free
You're being well fought for, this I guarantee!

I know there are no words to say at this time, except how sorry that I am. My thoughts and prayers are with you always. Joseph will never be forgotten.
For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I'm home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I'm only a civilian
And I don't even know if it's allowed
But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.
For those missing in action;
for those who didn't make it home.
I know you're in God's presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.
I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you .
I Salute You.

My heartfelt sympathies. I knew this great man for a short season. We shared 8-10 weeks together in the Spring of 2007. A memory I have of him has always remained with me although we did not remain in contact after our brief time working together. My memory is more of an example he lived out than a specific instance. It is that he was such a great man of God. He humbly conducted himself in such a way that you admired his faith, he didn't need to verbalize a thing. He was the type of Christian that made you feel peacefully content. This man is nearly ten years younger than I. Still, I hope I can grow to be like him. I am a better person for having known him and surely their are many others who feel the same.

As a senior in high school, I sat in horror watching television in the immediate aftermath of the towers being struck. Watching from his seat right behind me in our small AP Biology class was Joe. Very proud to have known him from that class (a tight-knit group at the time because of how tough the class was) and know that not long after that dark moment, he would go on to protect our freedom. Rest in Peace Joe and thank you for everything.
