John "Bunny" Duncan Barbes, 96, a beloved professor, coach and administrator at Wagner College, NY, US Navy WWII veteran and New York native, died peacefullly, Monday, April 1, 2013, on his birthday, at home, in Sunrise, Florida. John was born in the Bronx, NY, grew up on Staten Island, and relocated to Florida, in 2008 He and his late wife of 67 years, Lila, met at Wagner and married in 1941. He graduated from Arnold College and Columbia Teachers College. He joined the staff of Wagner College, in 1946, and retired in 1983. Honors include the Wagner College Athletics Hall of Fame. Wagner NAA honored the couple by establishing "Wagner Alumni Laureate Award" and naming it for them, recognizing distinguished life long service to the College."My father was loved and respected by students, family and friends. He will be missed by all who knew him" said his daughter, Linda A Barbes Stein, Sunrise. "He was generous and respectful to all people." Also surviving Mr. Barbes are his son, Allan D Barbes, Tampa and grandchildren James A Barbes (MD) & Adrianna E. Hensley (IN), and five great-grandchildren. Cremation arrangements by Dignity Memorial. Burial will be in NY, late April. Local friends are invited to an informal gathering, Saturday. April 6, from 2-8 pm at the Stein Residence, in Sunrise. Contact the family for details. Contributions can be made in "Bunny's" name to Wagner College, Staten Island, NY.
