February 15, 2019 Bob Friend was my boyhood idol. I treasured his baseball cards, memorized his stats, and watched on TV whenever his starts were televisied. I wrote him several fan letters and he always answered with picture postcards and handwritten notes. Several years ago I wrote again, thanking him for the great memories, and once again, he replied with kindness. I doubt if even those who saw him in his prime realized what an outstanding pitcher he was.
