C. Conley Obituary

C. Darrell Conley, 81, of 3670 Cottons Road, Canastota, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, at University Hospital, Syracuse, after suffering a stroke at home last week. He was born on August 6, 1932, in Canastota, the son of Clarence E. and Gertrude Johnson Conley. Darrell lived in Canastota all of his life, graduating from Canastota High School. He later graduated from Dean Academy in Franklin, MA, and attended Colgate University and Syracuse University. He played football at both Dean Academy and Colgate. After college, he entered the family business, Westlake Manufacturing Corp. in Canastota, where he worked with his father, and later owned and operated the business for many years. Following retirement, he worked as a Toll Collector for the NYS Thruway. He was a Korean War veteran, serving overseas in Germany as a radio operator with the U.S. Army. Darrell was a member of the Canastota Lions Club, and the Canastota Rotary Club, serving as president for one term. He was also a member of Kanon Valley Country Club. He adored spending time with his two daughters and three grandchildren. Darrell enjoyed running, fishing, golfing, football, playing horseshoes, cooking, and the company of good friends. Darrell married the beautiful Lois A. Davie on July 4, 1957, in Canastota. Lois passed away on August 7, 2007.

Survivors: two daughters and a son-in-law, Kirsten and Petit Jean Goodman of Fayetteville, and H. Erin Nelson of Lenox, MA, and her fiance, Anthony DiLeva of Schenectady; three grandchildren, John-Philip C. Goodman, Meghan R. Nelson, and Shannon M. Nelson; cousins, Douglas Johnson of Oneida, and Carlton and Jacqueline Johnson of Portsmouth, RI, Lois' siblings, Mary Mero of Oneida, and Ralph and Carole Davie of Kiawah, SC; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Services: noon, Tuesday, October 22, 2013, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., Canastota. The Rev. Donna Chapman will officiate. Burial: Lenox Rural Cemetery, Canastota. Calling Hours: Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, 201 James Street, Canastota.

Contributions: Canastota Canal Town Museum, (to be used for a special project in his name), 110 Canal Street, Canastota, NY 13032.

I met Darrell at O'Learys tavern in on Burnet Ave. He was always smiling and had great stories to tell over a few Heinekens. He was just a good guy. My sympathy to his family.
