Marjorie Hinton Obituary

Marjorie Malone Hinton, 95, of Syracuse, died on April 4. Born in Rochester, New York, she graduated from West High School in 1935 and attended nursing school at Meyer Memorial Hospital in Buffalo, New York. Shortly after becoming a registered nurse, she contracted tuberculosis and was hospitalized for two years. In 1948, she married Robert M. Hinton, a veteran of the Battle of Iwo Jima, and the couple had three daughters. In addition to hospital nursing, Marjorie was the nurse for the Syracuse Children's Center, a precursor of Head Start, and a nurse in the Syracuse public schools. Against often-great odds, she struggled to do the right thing, whether raising her children as a divorced single mother or opposing societal injustice, most notably as a founder of PROMISE, now the local chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. She avidly followed local and international politics.

She is survived by her daughters, Katherine, Diane, and Mary Beth Hinton, all of Syracuse, as well as two granddaughters, Sara Saiger of Baltimore, and Natalie Saiger of Syracuse, and a great-grandson, Ryan. Marjorie will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held at May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society on Saturday, April 27 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill-either the national office in Arlington, Virginia www.nami.org/; or the local office, NAMI Syracuse www.namisyracuse.org/

Dear MaryBeth, Diane, Kathy. Sara and Natalie wishing you peace at this sad time in the loss of your dearest mother Marjorie. She was a wonderful woman dedicated to helping those less fortunate in life who had medical issues. She was also so interested in politics and current events pertaining to our world.
