Dear Scruggs Family,

I was very sadden to hear of the passing of my beloved professor Dr. Scruggs. I had the honor of being his student for two semesters at Syracuse. He opened my mind to African American history and to this day, I try to follow in his footsteps. He always pushed us toward excellence. He will be truly missed.

We were both honored to be taught by Dr. Scruggs as freshman US History students in 1959. We learned not only history but also study skills that helped us to succeed throughout our college careers.
Our deepest thanks to him and our sincerest sympathy to you, his family.

this man taught me in the first offering of maxwell 102 (or 101?) at syracuse, a class that was team taught by some of the best professors in the maxwell school. i was moved by his presentation because i never before had a black male instructor--at any level. in fact, i was so moved that i asked two of my best friends, andre del valle and charles yarborough to attend his next lecture. professor scruggs retired early in my undergraduate career, so i couldn't take another course under his instruction. still, i saw him a few years ago at su and thanked him for the lessons. his passing saddens me. rest in peace, professor scruggs.
