I first met Ed while serving with him in Tallahassee's 400th MP USAR unit from 1974 - 1980. He was an excellent officer and mentor and became a close friend. In 1978, upon learning I was looking for a job, he put me in touch with a federal bankruptcy judge who was looking for a judicial assistant. Having no prior legal experience under my belt at that time, I know it was on Ed's pure faith in me that he recommended me for the job. During my 35 year career, I had the privilege and honor of seeing Ed in action as an attorney practicing in our court. While we teasingly referred to him as "five o'clock Ed" because of his procrastination to file things until the last minute, it didn't take away from his skills at what he did best. I always appreciated that he would always make it a point to stop in and say hello and see how I was doing whenever he could. He was a great officer, practitioner and friend, and it was a pleasure knowing and working with him. My sympathies and heartfelt prayers go out to all his family.

Ed Rude was a kind and generous man. His service to his country and community was an inspiration to all. Although we grieve his departure, we celebrate the strong family foundation he leaves and the reunion with a son who departed too soon. God bless the Rude family.

I have been sad bout Ed all week, ever since I received as call Sunday afternoon and was told of his passing. I had not seen him in years but have fond memories of him from high school.

Ed was two years ahead of me in school. His senior year in high school, I dated someone in his class and as a consequence attended many of the parties and gatherings of his group of friends. That is when I came to be acquainted with him.

Ed had a penchant for telling corny jobs back then that his friends came to term affectionately "ERs" whenever he told them. He was also known as "Big Ed".

I also have a familial connection with Ed. His mother's brother was married to my mother's oldest sister. Several of his first cousins were also my first cousins.

My love and prayers go out to George, Marion Temple, Ed's son, Carl and his wife, and grandchildren. Your loved one's life was a life well led. You can be very proud of Ed's life and accomplishments.
