I had the privilege of hosting Cdr. Buell and his wife when he spoke at the VFA-106 Gladiator Dining Out ceremony in 1992. Cdr. Buell was our guest speaker. He left an awe inspiring impression on the young FA-18 Hornet Naval Aviators he met that night. Many of us remember fondly our time spent with Cdr. Buell over dinner, drinks and cigars. To my generation, Cdr. Buell was a rock star who was on a first name basis with Naval Aviators who are icons in our history. His experiences enlightened us all.

Although I did not know you...please accept my personal gratitude for the service that you have rendered to our country and us as individuals. Thank You from the bottom of my heart.

My oldest son, Rob, met Hal in Tallahassee several years ago. Both were Navy men. When Rob told him he was on the "new" Saipan, Hal gave him an autographed copy of his book and spent quite awhile talking with him. The book and his time is a cherished memory for Rob. My deepest sympathies to Hal's family and Thank You for sharing his life with the rest of us. May the peace of The Lord be with you.
