I have lived in this area since the early 1970's. I "woke up" with Bill for years. He was the consummate profesional but his heart always showed through. To his family, he will always be as close as your heart.
Report well in heaven, Bill, your job on earth is done, albeit far too soon.
When I first moved to the area from NY, I had to watch all the news stations to figure out what news I wanted to dedicate to watch, it did not take long to choose channel 8 because of Bill Ratliff, he was such a first class act! My condolences to his family.
I'm not a journalist but even I could tell that Bill was a class act!!!
Sending prayers of healing peace & strength to the family & friends of Bill Ratliff.
Since 1990 I have watched Bill Ratliff anchor the news and enjoyed how he always presented the happenings of the day. May he rest in the arms of the Lord and may the perpetual light shine upon. For many years my husband and I started our work day with Bill Ratliff on the morning news on Channel 8. He always had such a winning way of delivering the daily news . When he left Channel 8 we tried in vain to find another newscaster with his talents. We will be keeping you in our prayers.

My family watched channel 8 exclusively in the mornings because of Bill's presence. We so enjoyed his personality and the chemistry between him and Gayle and John.
He certainly was missed when he retired, it has not been the same. What a fine man.
I remember watching his newscast for many years. He will be missed.
Our deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

I missed him every morning after he retired..his humor and that great smile helped my day start off right. Rest in Peace and prayers for the family.
I was so sad when he retired a few years ago as he and Gayle became a part of me waking up every morning. He had "The Voice" long before it became a TV show but it was his sense of decency that was so easy to detect with every story he reported. I had the pleasure of meeting him on the set of his show a couple of times and would occasionally see him at Sacred Heart. This was a good man and the world is a little better because of him. Rest in peace Bill and God bless his family.
A SPECIAL PERSON IS GONE BUT MAY HE NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. AT 29 YEARS OLD I REMEMBER WATCHING BILL DAILY WITH MY 74 YEAR OLD GRANDMOTHER OVER THE SPAN OF MANY YEARS. BILL RATLIFF MAY YOU BE REMEMBERED BY YOUR MANY VIEWERS & STAFF MEMBERS THROUGHOUT FLORIDA. REST IN PEACE...MAY YOUR SPIRIT FOREVER LIVE ON!
Prior to leaving the area in 2006 I watched Bill present the news everyday. A professional at his craft turned his journalism abilities into a gift. His passing is sad for all he touched but his memory and legacy lives on. Thoughts and prayers to his family.
Rest in Peace. Thank you for your contribution to our community.
I had the pleasure of working with Bill over many years at WFLA and was proud to call him a friend. Although I left 14 years ago, we kept in touch, and he always had a kind word. He was a great journalist and humanitarian, and we will miss him greatly.
You knew by Bill's personality that he was a genuine man off camera as well as on. He was able to share his love of his family and his community with great joy. I was hoping he and Linda would be enjoying their retirement and am so sorry he has left everyone so soon. He was a great man and certaily will be missed by all who loved him.
I hadn't been watching channel 8 for a while due to my schedule, but followed Bill and Gayle for many years. Bill and I corresponded when my cats picture was aired one morning and we learned that his wife Linda and I both grew up in Northern KY, only a couple of miles from each other. (Linda; I grew up in Crescent Springs!) Bill and I would reminisce about favorites haunts in KY and even before that, I knew he was a man of integrity and honesty. He was a very real person you felt understood so much more than than the stories he reported. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. May your many happy memories created with Bill comfort you at this difficult time. Sincerely, Mary H., Sarasota, FL
Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you.
Bill Ratliff was as close to the definition of the consummate journalist and broadcaster as one could find anywhere in the country, Bill is right up there with the best of them. His ability of connecting with his audience to convey the real meaning behind a complex or simple story, and his sense of fair play and honesty, his compassion, his genuine interest in the stories he reported on, his involvement in civic functions went beyond the obligatory responsibility required of media celebrities. Bill Ratliff was really the best of the best and his silenced voice and presence will be greatly missed. Our sincere condolences to his family.
My condolences to the Ratliff and Channel 8 families. I will always
remember his love of tater tots, his dedication for life and work. A Great Loss for the Tampa Bay Area. Rest in Peace Bill.

I think about Bill's thoughtfullness as one morning, several years ago, he found my debit card I lost near the parking garage and turned it in to the security desk at the Tribune back door.
It's one of those little things that means so much and I'll always remember.

I was saddened when he parted from the station and more so now to find out that he has passed. I pray that he is in a better place and I pray that his family will come to terms with his passing and somehow find some kind of peace. One of his most devoted fans.

Bill Ratliff was the first newsperson my husband and I turned to when we relocated to Lakeland from New Jersey. Along with Gayle and the late John Winters, he made us feel like he was part of our family and we were part of his. We miss you, Bill, but know that you are in a better place still smiling out at all of us. Thank you.
Thanks, Bill for being there every day for us delivering the news. You were the last of the true anchors! To Bill's family: I'm sure he missed quite a few holidays, birthday parties and soccer games. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to sharing your husband and father with us.
May 10, 2012 You will be greatly missed. -Delores Porter, Valrico,Florida
I started my school morning with Bill for 20 years. He was upbeat and informative. Because I was from Cincinnati and a UC graduate, he became an instant favorite of mine. He could talk about the Bearcats, Skyline Chili and Graeter's ice cream and I felt as if we had shared part of our lives together in some way.
May you know God's peace at this difficult time.
Great on-air personality. Smart guy also. He will be missed and always remembered. Our prayers go out to his family and friends. He made a difference in our community.
In my family we were not allowed to watch cartoons or MTV in the mornings... only the news. Bill Ratliff was a staple in our household. I was struck with great sadness when I learned of his passing. He is such a huge part of Tampa Bay history and his voice, smile and warmth will be greatly missed.
We never met, yet you were in our home so often. You were the real deal. If there is work to be done in Heaven, I am sure you are covering the latest. This is one grand assignment! Prayers for your loved ones.
I was totally shocked when I heard this news today. I have been watching Channel 8 news for about 30 years here in Florida. (Sarasota, then Tampa where I live now). I had missed him on the news along with Gayle. THey were the 2 BEST. My heart goes out to his family as they grieve a great loss. I saw his daughter and son today and they should be so proud. He was a terrific person and so professional with a wonderful sense of humor. No way he should be gone this early.
My heart goes out to his family, may God give you the strength to get you all through your loss of Bill, he will be missed.

Did not know him nor ever watched him on television, however, by the looks of all of the folks who signed the guest book and left comments, he must have been one heck of guy so, I took the time to read about him and his background and it sounds like we lost a decent man.
Bill was my all-time favorite local newscaster. He was a consummate professional and his warmth and sense of humor made him stand out from all the others. The newsroom has not been the same since he left, and the world will not be the same without him. My deepest sympathy and my prayers go out to the Ratliff family.May God's peace be with you. We have all lost a great, great man.
I have been a viewer of the News Channel 8 Today show since 2004, watching the Bill and Gayle anchor team right through Bill's retirement in 2009. To me, Bill's most vivid trait was his solid professional delivery of the news. It was always satisfying to hear the events of the world from a man who had such a talent to connect with the viewers in the way that he did. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family, friends, and all who loved him.
God Bless the Ratliff family during this time of sorry. Bill was a wonderful humanitarian and it showed in his work.
Although we never met Bill we enjoyed his broadcasts! Always professional and personable. We've missed him since retirement. Our prayers are with you and know that God takes every step of this journey with you! There's a new anchorman in heaven watching out for all of us!

Remembering for years the sound of Bill's voice coming from the living room TV as I prepared dinner...every night for years. He seemed like family who's voice and take on the news, good or bad, was always comforting. We are heartbroken for his family and for the loss of such a wonderful man. We all will feel the loss.
As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.
Gayle, I just read your blog tribute to Bill, who was a favorite anchor of mine. Indeed, you were truly, truly blessed to have such a friend and mentor for so many years, to grow up and grow older and grow fond of. What a wonderful, loving dedication to your friend. I'm sure the keyboard was wet with tears as you wrote it. But knowing that Bill Ratliff knew and loved God? Oh, my dear, that's the icing on the cake. You, your family and Bill's loving family will be in my prayers today, and in the days ahead as you adjust to missing Bill. And may the Lord take away the sadness and leave you all with great joy at the happy memories you have of him. He is, indeed, in a spectacular place.
As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.

Our deepest condolences to The Family, & to his TV family. Prayers & God's loving hands be with you all during this most difficult time. As a viewer we come to feel the morning crew is our family also, when Bill left the daily morning show it took some getting use to but knowing he was with his family at home, which he so richly deserved made it ok, to have his life taken at such a young age is just so difficult to grasp. Last week I had to say Goodbye to my Best Friend of 27 years, to Leukemia, my question has been all week how do we step through each day without that most loved one in our daily life. Now I know the answer, they gather in Heaven, the Choir of Angels who we will join because that is the Ebb of the Tide of our lives. May your hearts know that you are not alone in your depth of sadness, try to find a way to celebrate the life that he lived because it is certain that in Heaven they Angels sing Be Not Afraid, hallelujah we have the light & behold all those who have walked before us. may the Road Rise to meet you & Gold Hold you in the Palm of His Hand. May their be a light on in the window for each of us.
My prayers are with the Ratliff family and the WFLA family. I always thought Bill seemed so nice while reporting the news. One day, I got the chance to meet him and he went out of his way to say hello to me, I was so impressed by how nice he was. May God bless him and his loved ones!

To WFLA News family, the entire Ratliff family, and their friends: my condolences and prayers go out to all of you in the loss of a great newsman, Bill Ratliff. I have been in Pinellas County, Florida since 1976, and I have watched WFLA Channel 8's newscasts off and on over the years. I enjoyed listening to Bill when he was the anchor and also when he was out on the town reporting on important stories. I especially remember September, 1985 when Hurricane Elena sat off the Pinellas coast for nearly 3 days as a cat 3 storm just making circles in the Gulf of Mexico, and here we were watching every available news program trying to get alot of info about what Elena was going to do next, including the Weather Channel. Bill was out there in the hurricane force winds giving us updates on what was happening here in Pinellas County thru those 3 days! One day be fore Labor Day, Elena finally decided to move towards Louisiana and Bill was out there to let us know what was going on and the damage that Elena did to Pinellas County beach cities, and he always kept in touch with Channel 8's meteorologist staff for hurricane updates from NHC, Miami. He rolled up his sleeves and did what he loved to do everyday. He was also with everybody in the WFLA studios on 9/11/2001 when the USA was under that terrorist attack and stuck with that horrible story all the way thru. Those are just a couple of the many important news stories that he has covered over the years, and we will all miss him greatly! Now, he will take his news reporting experience to heaven as their news anchor! May God bless everyone who knew him and worked with him!
