Mark Longway Obituary

Hillsborough County Sheriff's Deputy Mark Longway, 48, a Hillsborough High School graduate and Air Force veteran, was killed in a traffic crash in downtown Tampa early Tuesday, Sept. 21.

Longway leaves behind his wife, Laura, and two daughters.

Colleagues describe him as a "really good guy." He was a proactive deputy during his six years with the force, one who raced for charity and was honored for his actions on the job.

In April, 2009, he helped save a man threatening to jump off the roof of a business on Fletcher Avenue. In June, 2007, Longway was named "Law Enforcement Officer of the Month" by the North Tampa Chamber. He also has won the department's integrity grant scholarship.

Longway, who joined HCSO in 2004 after serving 21 years in the Air Force, was proud of wearing a uniform.

"This uniform is just a different color," Longway said after winning the scholarship. "I'm still serving. First it was my country, now it's my county."

Funeral arrangements are still being made.

I was very stunned and saddened this week to learn of Marks passing four years ago. Even though I am late in learning this news I want to express my deepest condolences to Laura and the entire Longway family. I was privileged to serve with Mark briefly at F.E Warren AFB in Cheyenne, WY back in 1992-1993. Although our paths crossed briefly he made a very big impact being my sergeant, a role model and leader to look up to. Many of his traits, stories and just being around him taught me lessons and shaped my career in that short time and still hold true today. So I was very moved in hearing that Mark never changed from being that person that I knew and continued paying it forward, being the leader he was and becoming a Deputy after retirement from the Air force. I read that he said the uniform may have changed and he served his country and now his county. Miles away and years later I also said the same thing working for my county after serving my country and returning to public safety. However from this day forward if I do say that again it will remind me of Mark and how much of an honor it was to know him.

dear longway family, it was such a shock to us all to find out that mark past away just a year ago. i don't know if you remember us... at least not brandi and sherri... but we (the quebrals... donato, merle, joyce, rose and "the twins" melissa and melinda) used to live right under you guys on via del molini (aviano). our mom was the base pediatrician... and dad played lots of golf. we remember your dad... and mom... really well. they made our first year living in italy so pleasant. we remember mark as the most energetic, positive, kind and friendliest of persons anyone could ever meet. know that he lives on within each of us by how he touched our lives. so much care to you all... let laura know she's in our thoughts and prayers... and that we remember her yummy lasagna! :)

Hey Dad.....I'm sorry it has taken me so long to write something here on legacy for you. I've tried several times and found myself at a loss for words. I didn't know where to start or what to even say. I miss you so much. In DC I started to write a little something for you. A month has almost passed since then and I finally finished it today. I hope you like it.....

A Father's Day Wish for U.S.A.F MSGT and HCSO Deputy Mark A. Longway

A true American HERO you are.

Not only did you serve and protect our Country and it's Freedom from afar,

You also served and protected our Community and it's People while patrolling in your car.

Now you look down on us from Heaven shining like the star that you truly are.

Your presence is made known and felt daily; Oh how you are missed so gravely.

You're strong, you're caring, and you're very daring.

You stand up for what's right and fight with all your might.

Your song writing and singing, oh how beautifully in my head they're still ringing.

Your laugh is contagious and your jokes are side splitting outrageous.

There's so much about you that I can say, but if I did then this poem I write for you Dad, would go on forever and a day.

If Heaven had a phone I'd give you a call,in hopes, to make your day a little brighter because you are so far from us all.

The memories that were made, in my heart forever they will stay.

Friends and family send you warm wishes.

Mom, Sherri, Marley, the boys, Josh, and I send you warm wishes too, with EXTRA BIG HUGS and EXTRA BIG KISSES.

I really wish Heaven had a phone so that I could call today and say....

I love you Dad and Happy Father's Day.

Mark,
I'm still in shock after hearing about this. I still can't believe it. After sharing only a couple of memorable ride alongs, you welcomed me with open arms into your home and introduced me to your lovely wife. After the first ride along you took me on I could tell you were a great person. Always going the extra way just to help someone. Unfortunately our time together was short and I just want to say I'll miss you dearly and you were a great positive role model.

I thought the right words would come to me, but I'm still at a loss. There are just no words to express how much you're MISSED and LOVED by all of us who were truly Blessed to have known you and your entire family. You are the guy who all try to follow. Your LOVE, ETHICS and INTEGRITY are unsurpassed! I know you are in Heaven watching over all of us and we are so VERY THANKFUL for our new Angel! You are with us all everyday and continue to bring a smile to our faces. You are dearly missed! Until we meet again, my friend, may you Rest In Peace. All Our Love, Forever!

Mark,
You have a special place in our hearts. The moment I met you I knew you were very special and were especially dear to Perry. I will keep all the times we spent with you and Laura, from our family reunion to the vacation in Tennessee close to my heart. I am very glad we got to spend that weekend with you and Laura, and still have pictures of you and Perry "watching" the race with your eyes closed. We love and miss you and there is not a day that goes by that we don't think about you. Laura,Brandi& Sherri, you are so blessed to have had such a great man in your lives. We love you.

I was stationed with Mark at Aviano during my 1981-1984 tour, he was my next door neighbor in the dorms and a great guy. But when he met and married Laura, he went to another of happiness. I came back in 1988, Mark, Laura and the girls took my family in (Margaret and Candice) and showed us so much love. Mark was truly one of the last triple threat men a "Good Husband, Father, and Friend". He'll be missed, but his memory will live on.

I was stationed in Aviano with Mark in the early 80's. It was always a good time when Mark was around. He was always upbeat, friendly, and never at a loss for words. I was there when he starting dating Laura. It was a few years later when I received a Christmas card from them with a return address state-side. It was a pleasant surprise. Mark, you did good. I could tell in Marks voice when he called, how happy and content he was with his life. Laura, I am sorry for your loss, I will continue to keep you and your family in my prayers. Love Ya, Mike and Brenda

I knew Mark from Aviano, he was one of the funniest people I had ever met. We always had some good times together, I remember when he first wanted to meet Laura and didn't speak any Italian, what they did to him made him learn the language. Well the rest is history. Mark wasn't just a friend to me he was a brother and I shall miss him dearly. We love you Laura, Kurt and Beverly Miller

I was blessed with meeting Mark & Laura at Avaino, Air Base Italy. Mark was the best he was from Tampa, Florida and I was from Vero Beach, Florida. We use to joke about him being a west coast boy and I an east coast boy. Mark invited me to his wedding and I remember the day well 5/26/1984. I watched this west coast Florida boy look into the eyes of his Angel. I knew on that day that Mark had found his soulmate for life. I remember how proud of a Dad he was the day Brandi was born. He came to me one day and asked to borrow my video camera to make a tape to take home to Florida. Mark always thought of others before himself there was nothing he would not do for you. One thing is for sure Mark will always live in my memories and my heart for he touched me as I am sure so many before and after me. Mark my friend God Bless and we shall meet again.

I just found this page but I heard of this tragic event when it happened. Words can’t describe how great of a man Mark was. I will never be able to speak to him again but I will have memories that will last forever. I know how much Mark disliked not being in law enforcement when he had to cross train into personnel but even with that, he did an amazing job at whatever he was given. There was no way anyone could tell he wasn’t a core personnelist.

Mark was my volunteer partner every year with the Special Olympics. We looked forward to helping out every year together and it was obvious to me how much joy it brought Mark knowing he was making other people’s dreams come true.

After reading everyone’s post here, I see many familiar names that work together at Hanscom AFB and that’s just a testament to the impact Mark had on everyone he came into contact with. The world lost a great man and my heart goes out to Laura and the girls.

I had first met Mark when we had a fraudulent check at my store. He had come in and had done the report. I had seen his name badge and asked him if his daughter was Sherri. He said yes and asked me how I knew her. I told him that I had greaduated from Sickles High School with her. He then went on about how much he loved her and the new little one. Just from meeting him those few times that he answered our calls, you could just see that he was kind, funny, and just a an all around nice man. I had just moved out to Utah with my husband when I had heard of his passing and was shocked and sad that I could not attend the funeral. I give my condolences to the entire family. I am so sorry for your loss. You are in my prayers.

Dear Mark,

We met in 1982 when you were stationed in Aviano, Italy. We fell in love the moment we first laid eyes on one another. You were and will always be my "Knight in Shining Armor". You captured my heart with your romantic ways, your love, your laugh, and your smile. Neither one of us could speak a word of each other’s language, but we could see the love for one another in each other’s eyes. I still have my little, Italian to English, pocket dictionary. I also have all the letters you wrote to me from when you wanted to tell me something in Italian. We've been together 28 beautiful years and I still love you just as much as I loved you the day we met and the day we said "I do". Mark, besides your love, you gave me the two greatest gifts in the entire world, our girls. I see a lot of you in them. I see a lot of you shining through our grandchildren too. When we're all together it's like you're there in the room with us through all the things they say and do. We all love and miss you very much. Mark I love you so much that it’s hard to find all the words to describe my love for you. You are my happiness, my strength, my courage, my everything, and so much more. You are the love of my life and forever will be for eternity. Every moment shared and every memory made with you will forever be held dearly and treasured in my heart. I am proud of you and all that you have done for us and for our family throughout all these years. Thank you for everything Mark. You did not have to do all that you did, but you did do it all out of pure love from your heart. You are such a wonderful Friend, Husband, Son-in-Law, Father, Father-in-Law, and Grandfather. You served our Country and Community proudly. We are all proud of you Honey. You are our Hero. This is not good bye and I will not say good bye because I know you are still with me and I feel you by my side. Ti amo (I love you) Mark.

Love your wife,

Laura

My wife and I met Mark and his family when we were stationed at Hanscom AFB MA. We moved to Alabama, but kept in touch. When my mother was hospitalized in Boston, Mark insisted we stay with his family. He went to her side so she wouldn't be alone until our arrival. After she passed, Mark helped us make all the arrangements, and his family helped us through the grief. That takes a very special kind of man and family. We miss him greatly, although he will always be in our hearts. He made the world a greater place. Our deepest condolances to Laura and the girls.

We had the priviledge of working with Mark at Tampa Bay Downs. He was one of the nicest guys that we were fortunate to have known. Mark was always upbeat, funny and always had a smile on his face. I had the pleasure of knowing Mark from Tampa Bay Downs. Mark happened to be working here the night I was giving a going away party for my son who recently graduated from Marine boot camp and was leaving to be stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC. Mark, Being the proud military man he was, stopped in to say hi, and talked "military" to my son. Though I didn't eavesdrop on their conversation, I knew that my son really appreciated the positive advice and reinforcement. When my son was deployed to Afghanistan, Mark always asked how he was doing. Mark, knowing the nervous mother I was, would calm me down with his “Everything will be fine” talk. He let me know that if at any time I wanted to chat or had concerns, that he was there with a listening ear. And you know what??.....Everything did turn out all right… just as Mark said.

Thank you Mark for all the positive input and giving me that peace of mind. My son also thanks you.
To Mark’s wife Laura and daughter's: May you lean on God for his strength in your time of sorrow. May your cherished memories carry you in the days ahead.

My heart broke when I learned that Deputy Longway had been killed in a car accident. Last year, he responded to my home after we discovered that we had been robbed. Throughout the process of taking finger prints and talking about the next steps, Deputy Longway took the time to play with our toddler and engage us in interesting conversation. But the thing I remember the most about him was the tremendous love and pride he felt for his wife and daughters. He was beaming as he spoke about them. I'll never forget his kindness towards us that day. My sympathy to his family and to our community, because we lost someone special. May he rest in peace.

To the Longway family. I am grateful to have know Mark. He was a coworker/friend from the MDG at MacDill before he retired. It is sad to know that the world has lost such a great individual. He was an exceptional Senior NCO who was always full of shine. He truly touched many of his military brothers and sisters lives. My deepest regards and prayers go out to the family. He will be missed! R.I.P. MSgt/Deputy Longway!

I had the distinct pleasure of serving with Mark on "C" Flight at Aviano AB from 1986-88. I was a young Airman and looked up to Mark; he set the stage for my career as well as countless hundreds, if not thousands, of other Defenders. I am deeply saddened by his death and offer my sincere condolances to his family and friends. Rest in peace Defender. Post.

I just got back from service. I am a Pinellas County Deputy. I have been in the LEO system for 22 years. I have been to over ten LEO funerals, and this was the most touching so far. The speakers were the best, brought tears to my eyes. I only wish I had met this wonderful Deputy. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. He will be sadly missed by all. My wife is a Deputy too, and could not attend. I wish she could have heard the wonderful and amusing things said about Mark.
Does anyone know how I could get a copy of the service to show her?
Again, My thoughts to Laura and Daughters Brandi and Sherri.

Mark was such a special person which makes it harder because he will be so greatly missed, yet a little easier because of the many wonderful memories of his life and the way he lived it.
