Not sure what to say?

J.L. Chase (Papa)

I just came across a file copy of a letter I sent to Mason 9 Sept'93. I hope it will be interesting to some.

Dear Mason:

We both enjoyed your vist over the weekend and we enjoyed Tracee as well.
You better keep your strings on that girl, she's as good as they come--we think.

We are proud of you-you have been a joy for us for neigh on to 19 years, and we are confident you will excel in all you undertake and what you undertake will be honorable.

I don't know anyone who the Lord has blessed more than you. Be patient, keep in touch and He will see you through. Rom 8-28 Lots of love,
Papa and Nana

I'm glad he took my advise on Tracee- I haven't changed my mind on her.

Dear Tracee, Gabe, Landon, Ellie, Ann, Ed,Ed. Jr. and the Plank family; I meet Mason many years ago as a very young man; He always treated me with such respect and value my opinion as a selected glasses for him, such a personal thing; He will say "you know what I need ". Not to long ago I saw Mason as he needed gls since he had broken another pair, and always he open his wallet to show me the more recent pictures of the kids, he was so proud of them and love them so much; but the legacy that he leaves is great one , taken so soon but in his life he made big impact in peoples lifes. I pray for all of you and may God be with all of you. With Gods Love Martha G Montalvo Byng (Optical).

The following poured out of my soul after the services for Mason....

A Song for Mason

A blond haired boy just as cute as can be; Hunting with his daddy up in a tree; The hog, deer and turkey didn't have a chance, with the boy and his daddy down at the ranch.

Family trips to the Keys for some lobster tail; Always came back with a whale of a tale; Probably a miracle he didn't need bail; But his cheshire grin kept him outta' jail.

He did a whole lotta livin' in 33 years.
He did a whole lotta livin' in 33 years.

Two little boys and a baby girl; A beautiful wife; A very full life; Always a smile and a funny joke; A God fearing man - Strong as an Oak.
Then one day he was flying his plane; Something went wrong; Things would never be the same; We all shed tears; Man I wish he were here;

He did a whole lotta livin' in 33 years;
He did a whole lotta livin' in 33 years.

Now he's our angel - nothing to fear; We will savor life and keep our family near;
We'll do a whole lotta livin' in 33 years;
We'll do a whole lotta livin' in 33 years.

God Bless your entire family. With love, The Karlsons

I knew Mason through Farm Bureau, and I always believed that he would be the leader of the state organization sometime. He embodied so many qualities that made him likeable and admirable. Those of us who were privileged enough to know him should honor him by following the principles he used in life. He was a man of faith, of family and of diginity. He held himself to the highest moral and ethical standards. His legacy will live on through his three beautiful children. May God grant him peace and may God bring swift healing and comfort to his family and friends.

I remember Mason as a young man waiting to find his place in the world. I have not seen him or spoke to him since attending college at UF (2006). I am heart broken by this very sad news and my heart goes out to his family. Mason was a wonderful person and treated everyone with dignity and respect. I will always think of him as a young boy, sitting with his mom, dad and brother at various town events enjoying life. God bless all of you through this very difficult time.

To Tracee, Gabe, Landon, Ellie, and the entire Smoak and Plank family,

I pray that your family will find comfort and peace in your hearts. I know that the God who gave us the tremendous blessing of Mason will continue to pour out blessings in our lives. Right now I pray God carries you in his arms, and may you find comfort knowing he will continue to guide you every step of the way.

Mason’s life was truly one that was well lived. He was here only a short while but reflected God’s love through his actions and his words. He was so very special to everyone that came in contact with him. That was very evident with the out pour of love from the family and friends who knew him best. We savor the memories, and put the example he set with his strong character into motion in our own lives. His legacy continues on in the countless lives he touched. To have known Mason is to have had a friend for life. Amy and I look forward to seeing our friend again someday, where we can spend eternity together. On the day Mason flew from this earth to his creator, he was welcomed home in great celebration and told “well done, my good and faithful servant”.

We love you! You are and will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers.

Mason is our nephew. As with everyone he met, Mason always made us feel special. We often wondered if we did something to deserve this special treatment. The answer didn't come until this past weekend. That answer was right in front of us and that was that he treated everyone special. We occasionally have very special people like Mason here on earth as an example of how we should live our lives. Mason demonstrated more kindness, compassion and energy in his short 33 years than most of us show in our entire life. Mason's passing has left a big hole here on earth. The only way we can fill that big void is by sharing the responsibility to provide more of Mason's kindness, compassion and energy. If we do that, Mason will have accomplished another one of his many goals.

Tracee and family,
Our sincere prayers go out to you. I am Sharla Smith's sister. I've only met you and Mason once or twice, but I know that your family has
been wonderful friends to Steve and Sharla. My heart breaks for you, and I know it is hard to understand why. Sharla and I asked "why" many times after our father died. We can rejoice, though, in these times because we know where Mason is. I have seen so many wonderful things said about him, and Sharla and Steve always spoke so highly of Mason. Again, know that your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

To the entire Smoak family:
The passing of Mason has touched everyone who had the pleasure of knowing and working with him. Everyone in agriculture who worked alongside him for the common good of family, community, and industry is grieving. Mason was a true servant leader, always putting others and their concerns ahead of his own.

Mason represents the best our industry has to offer for the future. Let us take heart that our future is secure because the agricultural industry is truly rooted in the principles established by the founding fathers of our great nation. Let us not forget they were God-fearing men who understood our nation's future is secure if we preserve our God-given personal freedoms.

Our industry is secure because our current and future leaders grow up in small towns where family ties and community ties are strong, and common sense is the norm, not the exception. They grow up in a conservative working environment that rewards hard work and diligence, rather than appearance. They learn early on that "talk is cheap"; getting the job done is what counts.

To the Smoak family, thanks for allowing Mason the opportunity to follow his dreams in a way that has inspired us all.

Psalm 37:3-6 Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.

Sincerely, Rick Roth

God has a plan for each of us here on this earth. Mason has finished the work God had for him. Like Paul, he has fought the good fight, he has kept the faith, he has finished the course. And yet, he is still witnessing through all of these messages of love.

Mason will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.

Tracee, Ed, Anne and Edward, Jr., we too are praying for God to surround you with his love - to give you comfort and peace.

For those of us who went to school with Mason, I'm sure you'll agree - he was always smiling, usually very happy, and just a wonderful spirit to be around. Tracy - I still remember those highschool days when you two would look at each other and just smile across a room. I have many memories of Mason, from running around the pool at swim meets to meetings at FCA. The most precious gift of all is that I have the great memories of a warm, wonderful friend to help me remember the great things about him.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Mason's wife and both families in this difficult time. I pray that as time passes you can remember him for all that he was and still is in our hearts. That will never diminish.

I met Mason several years ago while being introduced into Farm Bureau. He was the first one to come up and greet me while amongst a group of strangers and that is what started a friendship that lasted over the years. He left a impression on everyone that he met without even knowing his name. Are first words when we would meet were "Hows your family" and we would tell stories about our kids. He always made me and everyone else in his presence feel inportant whether it was with Farm Bureau or just life in general. My heart goes out to his family and his children. You had a Great Dad that Loved you more than anything.

As I was about to get on a plane Friday afternoon bound for Washington DC I got an email that simply put, took my breath away. As many of us did that day we read in disbelief that we had lost a great friend. Its unfortunate what life throws our way but knowing the character and moral of Mason gives me blessed assurance as the song goes that he indeed had blessed assurance. Thank you to the support that the Smoak's have given me and my family and please now take our meager support in kind during your time of loss. As I told my wife after the shock factor had set in, "One day after the kids are grown enough, I hope to like many of us, to be able to say to Gabe, Landon and Ellie that I knew their father and he was the best a man can be."

Mason was quite possibly the most generous and loving man I have ever met. I lived in Highlands County for a few months and was associated with the bear project that Mason and Dave were working on when they were killed. On Friday the world lost two very good men. One, I wanted to be like personally and the other professionally. Mason had the kindest heart and I recall calling on him countless times for help. Whenever he would walk into the Family Restaurant or Scooney’s everyone knew him and everyone wanted to shake his hand. I loved Mason like a friend and looked up to him more than words can express. He offered me something I did not know before, and have not found since. Mason will be sorely missed. My deepest sympathies go out to Tracee and the kids as well to Edward and the rest of the family. There will never be another person quite like Mason Smoak on this earth and that alone saddens me more than anything.

If you were around Mason any amount of time at all, you knew that he was a man of faith. He wasn’t one of those “in your face, preachy, bible thumping” kind of guys, he didn’t have to be. He showed his faith through actions and the way he carried himself.
After being in Lake Placid for a few years, Sally and I still felt like outsiders. Sally had already started going to church, but I was more resistant. She was able to talk me into coming to Sunday school with her and I started going regularly. Mason was one of these people that I always looked forward to seeing Sunday morning. He always wore a smile, always hand a hand to shake, and was always in the mood for eating. He made you feel like you belonged.
As the weeks went on, we talked more and he would ask about my interests, family, and just generally be there to listen an offer advice as it seemed that my own family was being torn apart. He was always a good listener…

I found myself wanting to be like Mason. I wanted to help people when they needed it, I wanted to be kinder to people, even if I did not know them, I wanted to have that loving relationship that he had with his family. I knew that all of that was possible because of his relationship with God.
Through his example, Mason helped to restore my faith in Gods power and love. He showed me how one man can affect the lives of so many just by letting the Holy Spirit work through them.
This was the Mason that I knew…

I see it now, more so, that Mason was one of God’s candles, one of those candles that are sent here to show us the way through the darkness. Mason’s candle though, was so bright and burned so hot that we should’ve known that it couldn’t burn that way for long.
Maybe, on some spiritual level, he knew this, maybe, deep down, he knew he was not long for this world and that’s why he lived life the way he did.
I am just glad to have had the honor and privilege to have been guided by his light and share its warmth, if only for a little while.

Although my heart is hurting, and the world seems a little dimmer without that light, my true sorrow is for those that will never get to meet this wonderful man and the children that will grow up in this community that have lost such a wonderful role model.
It is up to the rest of us that knew him, to pick up where he left off. We must live on through his example so that a little piece of Mason lives on in all of us.

I once heard him say that, “Pines and Palms, if they aren’t good for anything else, at least they sound good with a breeze”. Every time I hear the breeze whistle though the pines or rustle the fronds on a Palm, I will know that he is near...

My prayers go out to the entire Smoak family. I know what it is like when life happens out of what we feel is the proper order, I also lost a son. On ocassion we are fortunate enough to know someone who is truly extraordinary. Mason Smoak was an extraordinary person. A consumate family man, a savvy businessman and a true leader in his community and the state.
We will never understand or see the equity in losing someone whose star was just begnining to rise. However, we can take comfort knowing Mason is at the side of God and he is smiling down on each of us.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Smoak family. I met Mason and the rest of the family when I traveled to Florida with Sean, Don and Linda Mintz for Thanksgiving a few years ago. All these words that have been said are nice and greatly appreciated, but the void is still there and always will be. Mason would have told us to fill it with faith, hope and love and that is exactly what we need to do. Have faith that we know Mason is working with God now, have hope to know we will be with him and our other family and friends in the future and have love to know we have an extra angel watching over us. To Tracee, Ed, Anne and Edward Jr. words are all we have at this time. Know they are coming from our hearts and know we love all of you.

Mason my brother, how can I express the footprint that you left on my heart. As a younger friend you've shown me attributes that should've come from someone alot older, showing your patience, gentleness, kindness, giving heart and devote love and adoration for your wife and your children. I will miss every moment that we had together because I cannot remember a time that wasn't worth reliving. God took an Angel from us here, now work in us and give us the spirit that drove and led you.

One of the things I cherish about the time Frances and I spent in Lake Placid was the opportunity to see Mason and Little Edward grow from childhood to young manhood. What nice young men they became. Mason and Tracee went to High School with our Daughter then became a very nice young couple as they fell in Love, married and started a family. Our thoughts and Prayers go out to the entire Smoak family. May God somehow comfort you in your time of need.

God the Father gave his only son in a sacrifice for our sin that through belief in Him we might be saved. He truly understands your loss. Ed, Anne, Patsy and I are stunned and saddened by the news of this loss. Our prayer is for the grace of God to be manifested to you and that his mercy be adequate for you.

No words I say can express what a wonderful man Mason was... he exemplified the qualities of a Godly man in all that he did. He did not have to say that he was a Christian, you just knew by the way he carried himself and they way he treated all that he came in contact with. He will be dearly missed, but the comforting fact is that we know that he is in heaven right now with our heavenly Father. To the whole Smoak family, I know that the pain is deep and cuts to the bone, but REJOICE in knowing where he is and that you will see him again. We love you all!

Mason was a fine man, husband and father. The world, the agriculture community in Florida, Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, Highlands County, and especially his family and friends will truly miss Mason and his smile and commitment to things that were important to him.
Godspeed Mason and may God bless and be with your family.

Mason was truly one of a kind. I was blessed to have been one of his high school teachers. I don't know if I made a difference in his life, but he surely made a difference in mine. To Tracee and the children, my prayers go out to you. We now all have one more angel in heaven looking out for us.
