I know it had been a few years but I just found out of his death. I have to tell once again my favorite Tim Marcum story. It was December 1976 and Coach Marcum had been an assistant at my high school in San Antonio for two years. He left to coach at Ranger Jr college and was back at my high school for a recruiting trip. After talking with some of the players before school who were seniors he saw me parking my car. I was an equipment manager for three years and did not know what I might be doing for college next year. He called my name and I went over to talk to him. He said "Day. I want you to come to Ranger and he our equipment manager" I stammered for some words and said I would think about it. He said " there is no thinking about it ...I am talking about a full scholarship" ..The rest of the day I was in cloud mine. Needless to say I did go to Ranger for two seasons and then to UH also as an equipment manager. If it was not for Tim, I may not have gotten my degree. Thanks Coach. I will get those jerseys washed again in heaven she I see you.

Tim was my linebacker coach on the San Antonio Gunslingers. I was (initially very unhappily) traded to the SA Guns and met Tim in the hotel lobby where the team stayed during training camp.

Amid that day's confusion, apparently I missed a meeting Coach Marcum had told me about when we met that first time, and he later chewed me out about my no show. With my being irritated about the trade to San Antonio and wondering "who the hell is this guy", I chewed right back. Tim scheduled another meeting with me that night.

Figuring I was in for another butt chewing, and still unhappy about the trade, I showed up at the meeting "with my stinger out" as Coach would say. Tim opened the door, invited me in, and handed me a cold beer out of the cooler. "We seemed to have gotten off on the wrong foot. You are from Coahoma, Texas, and I'm from Roscoe---there is no damn reason why we aren't going to get along. You're a pretty good player, and I'm a pretty good coach, we can do some good things".

That is Tim Marcum. Charmer, Mentor, Coach, and Friend. ....and he was wrong, he wasn't a pretty good coach, he was one hell of a coach.

My condolences to the Marcum family. Mitzi and Michele, your Dad was the BEST!

I was the team doc for the last 8 years that Tim was the coach and we were good friends. I echo the sentiment that those who knew him well knew of his big heart. He loved football, but even more he loved his players. I remember my first year when we won the Arenabowl here in Tampa. A few weeks after he called me into his office and took out a ring sizer and asked be to give him my ring size. I broke into a smile and said "I get a ring too?" He said "Of course Doc, You are part of the team." At that point the ring was no longer important. He made me feel like a million dollars and I never forgot what he said. I had been a team doc before and since, but I never felt as much a part of team as the Tampa Bay Storm. I'm happy to have my ring, but even happier to have the privilege of calling coach my friend. Until we meet again Coach...

Rarely have I ever seen such a glow, a spark and enthusiasm in discussing a man as when Mitzi and Michelle spoke of their COACH. Their love of THEIR DAD will always be seen in their faces and heard in the stories they continue to tell. My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family.
