I worked at the Tribune and knew Tom. He was a great guy. He will be missed very much.

My mentor, my hero, my colonel. He was a Giant among sports journalists and led the charge to make Tampa Bay the sports mecca it has become. His rich sense of humor and earthy wisdom flowed from a soul molded by his humble Polk County roots. Our lives were enriched by his touch. Under his wings I survived high school, the University of Florida, the National Guard, the Tampa Tribune and the Camp Blanding wars … I was blessed by the years I was fortunate enough to stand in his shadow. I wish I had been a better friend ... LT Vernon Barchard.

Tampa has lost a legend. I really enjoyed the sports section when Tom has his commentary. He always told it like it was. Tom you will missed.

They don't have columnists like Tom any longer.

Tom was the greatest and like a dad to me. When I was 14, I began a photography career taking sports pictures for The Tampa Tribune. Mr. McEwen, as I called him back then, insisted I bring my film straight to him. When he saw me, he would sit up in his chair and return a very welcoming smile. He always honored me with respect, treating me as if I were a member of his valued sports staff.

He was very serious about sports and the Tampa Bay area owes this man a great debt for being instrumental in bringing major sports teams to us. I am indebted to him for making me feel very special as a young guy in a world that normally crushes all but the very seasoned and wise.

Good Bye, Mr. McEwen!

As a lifelong Tampa resident I'll never forget Tom's Breakfast Bonus, unique writing style, and love for the Gators. I remember reading his columns when I was 10 years old.

I'll never forget running into him at a Lightning game after they won game 7 to win the Stanley Cup vs Calgary. He said, "It's about time the fans finally start appreciating this team.". Being the Tampa sports fan that he was, I'm glad he got to see both the Buc's and Lightning win a championship.
