Billie, you have my heartfelt sympathy. I finally got a chance to read my Friday paper this afternoon and saw the article on Joe T.'s passing. I will miss him very much. He's the main reason I became a band director, and I think he's the best band director I ever knew.

Joe was one of the finest gentlemen I ever had the privilege to know. I was an incredibly irresponsible young man when I attended school at MTSU, and he was very patient, but unforgiving as my instructor in the music department, which is just what I needed. It wasn't until just a few years ago, i was able to find and contact him and let him know how important he was to me. I'm glad I was able to make that contact, and that he was able to forgive my youthful misbehavior. He was quite a guy, and no doubt will be missed.

Mrs. Smith,
You were the sweetest lady ever, serving as our Cub Scout den leader.....and our English teacher at CHS in 1968-69 (actually you survived us.....were horrible teenagers). Marilyn and I are so saddened by the loss of the fabulous band leader. My youth was filled with memories of them practicing in the north end of Saunders Hall.....and then watching them on Jones Field during fun football games.....he had that marching band in top shape.

we will be thinking of you. Our prayers and best to you and your family.

Billie,
I signed the guest book and when reviewing the entries, I realized I had not included my last name. I will miss Joe very much and am so grateful for his influence on so many people. I am glad that Ronnie and Joanna got to experience his teaching and gracious hospitality and for his confidence in me by encouraging me to continue playing my bass clarinet. II enjoyed being a part of Tennessee Valley winds. Let's keep in touch. Love you, Kim Yearwood

When I think about all the band members that came and went to COChampions, I smile, and remember how proud Mr. Smith was of that day. He will be so fondly remembered for what he accomplished, and the kind of person he was. Hail Sinfonia!

Mr Smith was a unique person. He touched my life and my heart. To have been such a small part of his life he made me feel as if I were just as important to him as the hundred other people surrounding him at that moment. With great sorrow I wish him God speed, with great joy he spent a full life with a beautiful family here and shared a brief moment with me. My prayer is for Billy and the rest of the family for strength and comfort to survive their loss. Anna Forte Wagner

Joe T.,the man is the biggest influence in my life. I learned the skills of band directing, music education, photography, boating, and we hit the little white ball around, also. WHat a pleasure to spend time with him, no matter what we talked about. I always tried to buy the Mercedes convertable coupe from him...he loved it too much to sell it. We joked about that alot. We used to play in the foursome of Joe T., Kenny Hull, Cliff Fuller and myself. What joyous fun we had. I really miss those times. Well, maybe one day, we'll get the 4some together again.
