George W. "Butch" McHugh, Jr.
ST. MARTINVILLE - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 pm, on Tuesday, February 19, 2013, at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church in St. Martinville, for George Wainright McHugh, Jr., 70, who passed away on Friday, February 15, 2013, at Iberia Medical Center.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at the funeral home from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm on Monday, and continue at 8:30 am until 1:30 pm on Tuesday. A rosary will be prayed by Rev. Ed Degeyter at 7:00 pm on Monday.
Rev. Ed Degeyter will officiate at the Funeral Mass. Scriptures will be read by Carmen Nicholson and Connie Pelafigue. Gift Bearers will be Peggy Champagne and Jeanne Pellerin. Interment will follow at St. Michael Cemetery in St. Martinville.
Mr. McHugh honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he was a helicopter pilot and JAG Officer. Having attained the rank of Captain, he was awarded two Purple Hearts, one Bronze Star, and three medals for Valor, as well as numerous other honors and medals.
Butch was an attorney for 34 years and also served as a consultant for the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office.
A true advocate for the citizens of St. Martin Parish, he was a member of the Governor's Commission for Addictive Disorders and served on the board for the Acadiana Human Services District. Butch possessed a heartfelt compassion and desire to assist anyone with addictive disorders - his help to them was infinite.
He enjoyed spending time with his family at his camp every weekend, hunting and caring for his animals, while accompanied by his faithful companion, his dog, Sammy.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sylvia Bienvenu McHugh of St. Martinville; two sons, Tom McHugh and his fiancée, Stacy D. Richard, of St. Martinville, and Paul McHugh and his wife, Angie, of Florissant, CO; one brother, Patrick T. McHugh and his wife, Stacy, of Pace, FL; and his sister, Serena McHugh Lockwood and her husband, Michael, of Mandeville.
He is preceded in death by his father, George Wainright McHugh, Sr., and his mother, Eunice Roberts McHugh.
Pallbearers will be Tom McHugh, Paul McHugh, Pierre Landry, Fred Bienvenu, Patrick McHugh, and Michael Lockwood.

Mr. George helped me very much in past issues that had come up in my past. He was an awesome man and help put a man in the State Penitentiary. The family has my deepest sympathy.

Dear Family:
My heart was truly broken when I found out about the passing of Mr. McHugh. He was a true fighter for state employees and Louisiana residents with addiction and mental health problems. We will miss a dedicated fighter for mental health and substance abuse services and a true friend. May God bless you.
