RIP Tony. We miss your commentary. The other commentators are not a patch on what you were.
the sound of summer has been silenced

The thoughts of Tony give me a special emotion. He was a true sportsman and a gentleman to the core and I can never forget his lively commentary. I really feel that his death is untimely. He could have lived for many more years.
Here is a small poem from me that might reflect his epitaph.
Upon this grave
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Light not a lamp
upon this grave.
In it may perish
little flies.
Plant not a tree
upon this grave.
In it may sit a nightingale
and sing a lamenting song.
Write not an epitaph
upon this grave.
It may not last
In the course of passing winds.
Drop not a tear
upon this grave.
In it lies a living yore,
I am swept into an unknown shore.
Seasons are my friends,
Every spring is an endless cascade .
Here, the passing winds are mine
The dale of love is synonym.

Good on ya mate, a true sportsman and world citizen - u were a shining light in the cricketing world
Having enjoyed his commentaries over the years, I first made Tony's acquaintance in Sharjah during the tournament in which South Africa were playing in 1996 when he told me he trusted I had been honest on my leave application and was not "pulling a sicky as, everytime I look at the screen, you're in the picture! He brought many, many valued hours of commentary over the years and will be sorely missed. Deepest sympathy to his whole family and friends.
Thank you for everything Chris Frank

Thank you Tony for many, many days of pleasure from your unique commentaries. My father & gr.father from Durban spent long hours debating the Packer series and as a youngster I remember deciding for myself that if a 'S.An.' was involved it must be a good thing. God Bless you in the great oval in the sky and your family as they mourn your departure. Tony, Durban, SA
Knowing that such a great man as Tony Greig was able to live and live well with epilepsy was an encouragement to myself, and to many others with epilepsy, to do the same.
I was a kid when I first watched my live telecast of a cricket match between England and India, played at the Eden Gardens. Tony was the captain of them, which had players like Chris Old and John Lever. Calcutta (Kolkata of now) was different, with its cricket during the winter season, and that match, captained by Tony was an engrossing one. Tony, in his usual ways, connected with the people in the stadium. Later, when he became a commentator, the booming voice and straight talking, used to make great and interesting commentary of the game, laced with humor
Tony, you were hero from cricketer days as England captain till the end.
RIP
You will be missed by all of us in the cricket world
Tony Greig was certainly one of a kind, a remarkable man who was never afraid to call it like he saw it no matter what the consequences. His just, fair and utterly unbiased views in the commentary box will be missed by all. My sincere sympathies to his family - Tony Greig will be missed by cricket fans all over the world.
RIP Tony, great asset to the game & his voice was the sound of summer for many in Australia, condolences to family & friends
I will always remember..."he's hit it hord, it's miles in the air, Hughes is coming around and Steven, oh it's a, oh it's are oh what a catch! what a catch! Hughes was coming around and the and the sightscreen down there, what a catch, unbeleivable Steven Waugh!" I must have done that a thousand times in pubs. It was a great catch though. Greigy will be missed by all real cricket followers. His voice was one of the sounds of cricket and the summer. Vale.
RIP Tony. May God grant you eternal rest.
Tony, was an inspiration to my two sons and myself all of whom have epilepsy. To see Tony achieve what he did whilst manging epilepsy was a life changer to us all.
Sadly missed,
Peter of Brisbane

Sorry to hear the sad news. Remember him very well from his Sussex and England days, saw him play, didn't hear much of his commentary, I had moved to upstate NY. Condolences to the family of this giant of a cricketer.
He said he'll shake them, break and make them grovel
He batted and bowled and put up a fight
They lauded, even applauded his spunk
They knew he taunted them, he laughed, he cried
And now they all shed tears that Tony's died.

A great African fondly remembered by us all. Good on you Tony for all the enjoyment that you have brought to the cricketing world these past 50 odd years.
You and I arrived in to the UK within 3 weeks of each other in 1964 - you became famous playing cricket; I became an RAF navigator.

I learned of your passing on last night's news and was shocked to find out that you had lung cancer and had hoped the treatment would save you for your family and thousands of us who enjoyed your cricket commentary on 9. I wish you all the best in heaven with Hookesy and all of your other cricketing friends. Condolences to your wife Vivian and all of your family.
Condolences to the Greig family. A sad loss for all cricket lovers of a man instrumental in modernising the game for spectators and influencing players attitude to the game. I will miss his insights and banter as a commentator.
I will miss your voice and entertaining commentary on cricket. There is no any other replacement for you Tony. You are a gentlemen with a big heart for young cricketers all around the world
Tony Greig you are a legend of this great game called CRICKET.
My condolences to his wife and family in this difficult time for the passing of Tony.
I remember back in the mid 70,s when Tony was on the screen representing his country England confronting Lillee & Thomson and holding up his end.
Tony turned on the Establishment in England to give cricketers an identity: give them more money: hence World Series Cricket. If it wasn't for Tony Grieg and Kerry Packer where will cricket be today!!
There is a saying by a slain US Presid talking about what you can do for your country and not the country do for you:
Tony Greig put English Cricket on the map: he was the role model for the next generation of allrounders like Ian Botham, Fred Flintoff in English Cricket.
Maybe the establishment should have a hard look at themselves.
Even in the other Code called Soccer they did the same to the late George Best: maybe like Tony Greig you have to stand up and be counted : he did that and his legacy will live on for the future generation of cricketers throughout the world.
RIP Tony Greig (legend of World Series Cricket)
Tony Greig, thank you for Bringing the game to life in all of our homes - we will miss you.
What a marvellous knock, thank you Tony

You helped me to mawster the south efrican eccent, Greigy. Mawvellous, unforgettable. Lawst ball before lunch, gone like a tracer bullet, sadly silent now forever.
ValƩ Tony, summer just will not be the same without you.
For 30 years, you have been a valued guest in my lounge room, thank you for sharing your insights and politically incorrect humour with all of us.
You and Richie were the stereo sounds of summer.
From here on in, I'll be listening to the cricket in mono.
Vale Tony Grieg. As a middle aged man I grew up watching Tony as a player and of course as a great commentator. His contribution to the game will always be remembered.

Tony Greig - loved your knowledge loved your charisma. An innings cut short, so sad to hear.
Legend of the game, both on and of the field. Will be sadly missed.
So young and so much to offer to today's player, but he will not be alone up there his mate Kerry will be waiting for him to start some new version of cricket up there I'm sure of it.
Rest In Peace My Friend
What a huge loss to cricket in general. RIP Tony.Sympathy to his family, friends & colleagues.
Without Greigy as a champion of cricket the game would not be as it is today. He stood tall in bringing to game into vogue. A key and a pillar in the game then and forever more. A marvellous commentator and a wonderful Captain and player. Respect to him and his family.
A real modern-age "gentleman". Very few men in today's bustling 'dog-eat-dog' frantic society can profess to wear the tag "gentleman". That is other than Tony Greig.
Great cricketer, great commentator, great man. Condolences to his family and friends.
RIP Tony Greig... You will be sadly missed by all... Condolences to your family...
A very good and competitive cricketer on field and a giant of the game off it. All current and future cricketers owe a lot to Tony Greig. Very sad loss. Condolences to wife and family. R.I.P Tony Greig.
A MAN we loved to hate, a MAN who loved to stir us up, a MAN who we loved to listen to, a MAN who loved being an Englishman born in South Africa living in Australia....a MAN, a GREAT MAN. Vale Tony Greig...Thanks for your efforts, thanks for making cricket what it is today.
Sri Lankans living all over are deeply saddened by the loss of their dear friend Tony; you were a gentle giant to the little Sri Lankans. For us,cricket commentries will never be the same again. May You Rest In Peace, Tony..
An extremely sad loss to world cricket and its fans everywhere. Tony Greig's voice (and much parodied accent) was as much a part of summer as Richie Benaud, a backyard BBQ, beer in eskis and cicadas singing in the trees. I hoped he would have fought the cancer and returned to our loungerooms for next summer's cricket season (and argued with Bill Lawry), but sadly that is not to be the case. My sincere condolences to wife Vivian, his four children, and to his wider family and friends.
what a loss for this world ,so sad.
Dear Tony - I will miss your beautiful voice so much. Cricket will not sound the same and although those summer tones may be gone, you will never be forgotten - Rest in Peace, Tony. My heartfelt sympathy to Tony's family.
