I DIDN'T RREALIZE JUST HOW MANY ACHIEVEMENTS MIKE HAD REACHED IN HIS LIFE. I JUST REMEMBER HE AND I KNOWING EACH OTHER STARTING IN 1961.

WE WOULD MEET EACH MORNING, HE WALKING FROM HIS STREET IN HARAHAN TO MINE AND
WE WOULD WALK TO BE THE FIRST ONES TO THE SCHOOL BUS TO TAKE US TO JEFFERSON JR HIGH. THIS WAS 1963.

THE YEAR THE BEATLES BURST ONTO THE WORLD WIDE SCENE. WE BOTH DECIDED THAT WE NEEDED A BAND!!! AND THE SUMMER '63 WITH 3 OTHERS, THE SONICS WERE BORN. I STOOD FOR HOURS NEXT TO HIM YELLING...C...F...G...HECK, IT WAS 1963 AND NOTHING WAS BETTER THAN PLAYING "LOUIE LOUIE"!!!!

A PERIOD IN MY LIFE I'' NEVER FORGET, AND THE MAN STANDING NEXT TO ME IS ALSO UNFORGETTABLE.

Dear Freda,
I just recently heard the sad news about your husband. My deepest condolences go out to you and your family. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. We, at Legacy, are here if you need anything.

Dear Freda,

You probably don’t remember me – we spoke a few years ago at a newspaper conference. I told you of my Louisiana connections, but didn’t realize – until today -- that you and I are just a couple of degrees separated.

I happened to be on SEJ’s web site and noticed a guest book for Mike, whom I now know is your late husband. I am a fan of his work – America’s Wetland is a wonderful, important book. Coincidentally, I used to work at the TP with Ellis Lucia, Bevil Knapp’s husband.

I shared the sad news with my colleagues here at Legacy.com, and learned that many of them are YOUR fans. Please know that we are thinking of you.

Best regards,

Hayes

My sympathies to Mike's family. As an SEJ member, I cherished his articles in the SEJournal. He asked all the right questions and wrote clearly and authoritatively. We readers miss him.

Mike entrusted his son to me for leadership and guidance while I was Assitant Principal at Baton Rouge High. I shall never forget his warmpth for people in general nor his devotion to the Principles, Practicles, and Purposes of Public School Education Education. He will be sorely missed by me. May God bless and keep you all during this moment of sorrow.

To Freda and the rest of Mike's family,
I've known Mike for many years through SEJ and wanted to make sure you know that to many of us Mike has been, and always will be, a shining example of what it means to be a passionate reporter, a generous colleague, and a courageous human being. We already miss him, and we will not forget him.

Dear Freda, family and friends:
Mike and I worked side-by-side for years on the SEJournal. His creation and perfection of the Inside Story served journalists around the nation. It testifies to his generous soul. Someone of his stature in the field might have just kept it all to himself and lived quite satisfied. Instead he tried to better us all. That is quite a legacy. The SEJ family will greatly miss Mike, his contributions, his sense of humor and his insight.
My heartfelt sympathy.

Freda, I have prayed for the right words to say to let you know how truly sad my heart is over Mike's death. As you know, we were close. I saved his life once, he told me, and I feel he gave me a lot more. I will miss him. We worked together on many stories. We partied together and we both loved the work of a Journalist. God will forever watch over you and the boys is my prayer.

This is Mike as I like to remember him -- standing in the marsh, working. He loved it. -- Freda
