Spent last night telling my 12 year old Essendon supporting son on who Jim Stynes was. When I started telling the story, about the 87 preliminary final, the Brownlow medal win, his 244 consecutive games and his Reach work with young adults and kids, it only got me thinking what an amazing man this guy was. We are definitely a poorer world without him being here, but by Christ he achieved so much in his time........one word LEGEND

To The Stynes Family,
With deep sympathy and a heavy heart ,I write these words for your family. I am so sorry for your loss. May you find peace in all the pleasant memories that you have, and may they comfort you, and bring you strength, in your time of grief. May you also find comfort with the thoughts below:
Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the LORD hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted.
This verse found @ Isaiah 49:13 has comforted me, I hope that t comforts you as well.

Dear Jim,
As a footballer you were a champion, as a father and a man your an inspiration. Even on the day of your death you reached out and touched me. The next day I decided to see a doctor and six days later was diagnosed with cancer and on the operating table. I have a fight ahead of me, however if not for you I would still not know. Thank you Jim and rest in peace.

A remarkable, gentle and inspiring man who will be remembered by so many for many, many years to come. I am not much of a football fan, have not had any direct dealings with Reach but I have always had the utmost admiration for Jim Stynes above any other public figure. He was unlike any other and did so much for so many. I met Jim very briefly at a charity ball for Reach about 15 yrs ago and was touched by his humility and his genuine interest in our group who were in awe of him. He was an inspiration to all he met and even those he did not meet. Jim was a very, very special man and my heart sincerely goes out to his wife, children, parents and brothers and sisters. Rest in Peace Jim. We will all miss you.

I never knew of Jim Stynes until his passing. Being a Dublin man myself, it filled me with an incredable sense of pride to see that a guy from such hubble beginnings could go on to achieve so much. I became aware of his footballing legacy & of his work off the pitch. He was obviously a true great of Aussie Rules Football & an absolute hero of a man. I also see that the work he done gave hope to so many people. His story will live forever RIP Jim Stynes. A Dublin / Melbourne Legend..

Dear Jimmy, I never met you but that was my loss .... I wish I could have had a friend like you in my life.....you were an inspiration and you are what legends are made of .....the world is filled with such evil and mean spiritedness and yet amongst it there was the rareness of such a beautiful soul as yours ...how can there be good and evil in one world ....imagine if everyone's heart was as big as yours....we can only dream... I wish you could have lived longer for your sake and that of your family but also for all the good which is still to be done and for all the lives still to be touched and for all the young people still to be moved and encouraged and inspired and given hope...imagine how much more you could have done....but then you did so much already ....it would be for our own selfish reasons to have you keep going when you were so weary....yours is the greatest shame ....I am a W.C.E. fan but Melbourne will now be my second team and in memory of you I will always stop and remember you when I watch your team play ...RIP

I knew Brian (Jims father) when I was a young lad in Dublin and spent a lot of time with Brendan ( Brians brother) as we lived next door to each other in Homefarm Road, Drumcondra.
I was deeply saddened to learn of Jim's death after his long battle with Cancer. He made a tremendous contribution to Australian life and leaves a heritage of achievements in both Ireland and Australia!.
May I extend my sincere sympathy to Jim and his family.

As a kid, I was once on your shoulders Jim after a De La Salle rugby match you had played in with my brother. You made me feel on top of the world not only because of the view from up there but mainly because Big Jim had given me the time of day.
As an adult, I'll do my best to give everyone the time of day.
Thanks Jim.

Jim Stynes was a Melbourne football legend. He belonged to the club my late father adored and passionately barracked for. They died of the same disease, they both gave more of themselves then most people do, both devoted fathers. My son William attends the Childcare centre co-founded by Stynes. He was even in the background of the documentary made of Styne's life. Like a lot of us, I feel he was someone we knew. I never did meet Jimmy Stynes but I surely wish I had. Rest in peace now big Jimmy.

We passed in the hall of the hospital,a smiling nod to say hi,I wore a wrap on my head,I was being treated for BC,bald as badgers we were..Yesterday I was sitting in a coffee shop thinking about you,I took out my pen and note pad and i wrote this...
"The man he is a Legend,
In far more ways than one,
His life on earth has finished here,
But his Legacy will live on,
Today you will be laid to rest,
Public for all to see,
An Inspiration.
Jimmy Stynes,
Thats what you are to me.

Jim Stynes - What a truly remarkable and inspiring man!! Such a sad loss for his wife and two young kids, to loose a loving husband and father at such a young age and also to his extended family in Ireland and Australia who have lost a loving son, brother, mentor and friend to so so many. Not to mention the thousands of kids lives he touched, inspired and saved through his Reach Foundation. And even though his life has been tragically and cruelly cut so short he managed to achieve so much and lived many lifes over in his short life, so much more than most people could ever dream of!! He will always be a hero to the thousands that knew and loved him for the great man that he was. He inspired you to be a better man. He was truly one of a kind and Jim Stynes will never be forgotten. May he rest in peace. What a legend.

Hey Melbourne let's all make a commitment to make a difference - I do already as a christain believe every single human being in numbers can make a difference. Sam & children I send a mountain of love to you. today you were so brave reading your eulogy the tears poured down my face recklessly for you three blessed souls who were ever so fortunate to experience knowing & having such a loving inspiring husband & father though called simply too bloody early!! I would swap places with Jim Steynes in a blink I too have struggled with cancer over the past 3 years as I am not a wife nor mother!! Gods calling is surely is for a far mightier role than here on earth. you will expeteince your husband & daddy being around you all the time hovering over you as you sleep & carrying you through the toughest of days for he will guide you ... wait & see angels do exist ? ...

You were a wonderful human being with such a big heart for every person that came into your life you gave so much of yourself and Gary Lyons spoke at your funeral and said there will be never other Jimmy Stynes how right he is because Mr Stynes no-one could fill your shoes as your Brother said I never knew you but most of Australia would have said the same thing but we all thought we did thats how you made all of us feel
And my heart goes out for your wonderful wife when Sam came down the steps to get in the car how she blew a kiss to the crown and thank them
Mr Jim Stynes you certainly had the best people in your life because you were the best...And Thank-you for all you did you never be forgotten and may you be helping people in heaven and showing them how to play AFL for your beloved side the Demons May you rest in peace and no more pain Goodbye Jimmy Stynes

You were a football personality, and will be missed by all involved, but most of all you were an inspirational person and that is what I believe is the most important memory to keep in my heart. Watching the service this morning the Casket was to me the centre of it all and knowing a great loving man was being spoken of....went over my head they were words, beautiful they may have been, but it was you that was tear in my eye and the pain in my heart. God Bless you Jim and may your beautiful sole R.I.P.

I never got to tell you but you were accidentely the reason I became a Demon's supporter and long time member. I was at that fateful Demons/Hawks game, dragged there by my kids who were already Demon supporters. The emotion of that day got to me and I never looked back. Once involved I came to love you as did hundreds of others, not just as a fantastic footballer but as a great human being.
Thank you for all the wonderful memories.

Jim, it only a few weeks ago that I was asked 'whom I saw as a role model'. You were the first person that came to mind. I met you at Reach Foundation a few years back. I spoke to you about my son at the time. You stood there slightyly bent forward and listened to me. You showed me so much empathy and concern and this I will never forget. At no stage did you try to hurry away. Jim Stynes, I will never forget what a wonderful human being you were. Rest in peace Jim and you will forever hold a special place in my heart and my mind. My thoughts are with your beautiful family at this very sad time also. xxxxx
