Salem - Thomas P. Murphy Jr., 81, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, while surrounded by his family.
He was born in Norwich in 1931, to the late Thomas P. and Anna M. Murphy Sr. He was a graduate of Norwich Free Academy. Tom was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving during the Korean conflict.
On Sept. 17, 1955, at St. Mary Church in Greenville, he married his beloved wife Carol (Kirby) who survives him. Together they had two children and made their home in Norwich.
Tom worked for 32 years for SNET until his retirement. He was an avid camper, particularly staying near the shoreline, and was well known for his sense of humor. He enjoyed caring for his property but most of all, caring for his family.
He is survived by his wife Carol; daughter, Carlean Wirt and her husband, Gregory; son, Thomas A. Murphy and his wife, Maureen; one sister, Ann McGrath and her husband, Robert; two grandchildren, Martin and Chelsea Wirt; sister-in-law, Alicia K. Dyer; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, at Saints Peter & Paul Church, 181 Elizabeth St., Norwich, meeting directly at church. Interment will immediately follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Norwich. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight, at Labenski Funeral Home, 107 Boswell Ave., Norwich.
Memorial donations may be made in Tom's name to St. Patrick School, 211 Broadway, Norwich, CT 06360.

Carol and Family, I am incredibly sorry for your loss. I'll always look back on my conversations with Tom after I came home from school each day with fondness. He could always make me laugh, especially when he gave my Dad a hard time. He was a great neighbor and friend and will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time.

Carol, Carlean and Tom, my deepest sympathy. Tom was a great person, dedicated husband and father. He was also a wonderful brother and we had many great times as kids and I will keep those memories in my heart forever. I pray he is at peace and his suffering is over. May your wonderful memories with him keep him alive in your hearts forever. Love Ann & Bob

To MR TPM from MR TRM:
My uncle was a good man; patient, kind, dedicated. I always enjoyed his Sunday visits as a child, and his pulling me out of myself when I was turned inward was of great value to me. His humor might have gotten a little stale, but he always delivered it with the best of intent and tried to keep everyone happy.
Aunt Carol, Tom, Carlean, my deepest sympathy. He may be gone physically, but the unique parts of himself that he shared with each of us lives on. The only death is not being remembered.
