Christine Natsios Obituary

Natsios, Christine Daphne

January 2, 1953 -

February 16, 2013

Christine Daphne Natsios passed away after a battle with cancer on February 16, 2013 at the Cayuga Medical Center of Ithaca, NY. She was born January 2, 1953 in Athens, Greece, daughter of the late Nicholas Andrew Natsios, a US Foreign Service Officer, and Mitzi (Peterson) Natsios. She was a member of St. Catherine's Greek Orthodox Church in Ithaca. Ms. Natsios grew up in Greece, Vietnam, France, Korea, Argentina, and the Netherlands, where she acquired a unique perspective on global cultures as well as a talent for languages. A childhood spent traveling within the world of international diplomacy provided apt preparation for her subsequent career in the hospitality industry. A 1985 graduate of the Cornell Hotel School, Ms. Natsios had 30 years experience in special events management, catering, and sales with organizations such as the Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons Hotels, Sheraton, Intercontinental Hotels, The Columbus (Ohio) Athanaeum and Columbus Museum of Art. She was appointed director of alumni affairs at the Cornell Hotel School in 2005, where she served until present as the school's primary liaison to the 9,000-member Cornell Hotel Society and the Cornell Hotel Society Foundation. She traveled throughout the world on behalf of 59 international alumni chapters. Ms. Natsios was active in the Cornell Hotel Society, Washington, DC chapter for almost 20 years, serving as the group's president from 1991-1992, and an active member of the Cornell Alumni Association of Central Ohio. She was a valued member of the Greek Orthodox community, contributing organizational, interpersonal and culinary skills to church societies and festivals. She is survived by a son, Brian J. Barton and granddaughter, Kayla S. Barton of Columbus, OH; and partner, Charles (Chuck) T. Lilly of Cortland, NY. She leaves her mother, Mitzi Peterson Natsios of Alexandria, VA; sisters and brothers-in-law, Deborah A. Natsios and her husband John L. Young of New York City, Valerie S. Natsios-Mundell and her husband Robert A. Mundell of New York City and Siena, Italy, and Alexandra R. Natsios and her husband Joel D. Wall of Alexandria, VA. She is also survived by niece, Allegra Andreadis Natsios; nephew, Nicholas R. Mundell; and many beloved cousins, aunts and uncles. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. followed by a prayer service at 12 p.m. and reception at 12:30 p.m. at St. Catherine's Greek Orthodox Church, 120 West Seneca St., Ithaca, NY. A private interment will be held at a later date at Westlawn Cemetery in Lowell, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Cornell Hotel Society Scholarship Fund, checks payable to "Cornell University", c/o Cornell University, Box 223623, Pittsburgh, PA 15251-2623. Arrangements are by the Bangs Funeral Home.

Dear Mitzi, family and dear friends,

I only recently learned of Christine's passing and I was shocked and saddened by the news.

Christine and I were friends while we were both students together at the Hotel school. We had that special "Greek" bond shared by Greek Americans. We practiced our Greek together(hers was far superior than mine) and shared fun stories of Greece and growing up in a Greek Family. Amazing how similar things were, although, I have to say your home addresses were alot more interesting than mine!

I was lucky to see her several times in the last few years at HEC and alumni events in Chicago. Our conversations resumed right were we left them. I admired her poise, smarts, passion for people and love of everything Greek.

She will be missed. ?a s???p?t???a µ?? ?a? a????a t?? ? µ??µ?.

I am so sorry to hear of Christine's passing. Although I only met her once at a Cornell reunion in 2012, she was a big help to me, and obviously others as the leader of our alumni group. A great woman all around, taken too soon. She will be missed.

Dearest Mitzi, Deborah, Valerie and Alexandra, I am absolutely overwhelmed by the idea that Christine has passed away, and cannot tell you how deeply moved I am by this sadness, and how much I truly grieve for the loss you must feel and the emptiness she has left behind. Her passing is such a marker. Having grown up with all four of you wonderful sisters during our years together in Holland (and then later, at university in the US), I always felt as though I was the extra 'Persian' sister, and that Christine, the oldest, was our muse and mentor - trying out the US for college first (and what an experience that was!), going out with boys, being always slightly mysterious and wonderfully wise. I remember so well driving down to Washington DC all together for Thanksgiving one year, sharing a small car, feeling so at home inside its cosy comfort as Christine manned the wheel, her rich voice surrounding us as she told stories of her work in the hotel business - such new experiences for the rest of us, who were still just students. The relationship between all of you four was special - and so deeply admirable. It was a gift to be a friend of all and each of you - to have known Christine in those early years, and to have been included in the warmth of your home in Wassenaar, surrounded by Mitzi's aromatic cooking (such fabulous breakfasts), and the constant chatter of girls! As an only child, it was for me a wonderful enclosure. Continuing the friendships through the years of university meant that although I didn't maintain my own close contact with Christine, I heard her news through one or another of you - as I've been lucky enough to stay in touch with each of you in different ways over the course of decades (!): Valerie my oldest school-friend whose life has hopscotched with mine from Massachusetts to New York and more recently Europe; Deborah at Princeton and later in New York; Alexandra living close to me in Brooklyn for several years. Christine remains alive and real to me, as I know she does for you too. What I remember most about Christine, about her life and choices, was her courage. Hers was not the trodden way, but her own - not an easy way surely, but looking back, a deeply meaningful one. It was her courage that made her life so worthwhile and a lesson. Indeed, I feel that is what I must take away from her passing - a new look at the ways of courage, a renewed inner strength by which to face the life that is left to me. Across the years and miles, I feel still so linked to all of you, and feel strongly that Christine is still with us. With love and deep condolences, Roxane

Dear Mitzi,

I am very sorry for your loss. I never met Christine but I am sure she was a great daughter. I know how painful it is to lose an important person in your life. For the first time in my life I realized what forever really meant when I lost my father years ago. He was gone forever. In a way, passed people like my father and Christine are always in our lives because they had been in our lives. We know from the beginning that life is always limited by time but it is never limited by love and experiencing life itself as a wonder. Christine had a beautiful life. She was loved by all of you and people around her. I am sure she is living somewhere else in peace. Please don't be too sad although I know it's extremely hard. I am sure if she was able to see from somewhere, she would love to see a happy and strong Mitzi, like you always have been. Please take care of yourself and I hope to see you sometime soon.

Dear Thia Mitzi, Alexandra, Deborah, Valerie, and to all who knew and loved Christine, please know how much I loved and respected your loved one and friend. I was always in awe of Christine's poise and graciousness. As a colleges student, I went to visit her at the Willard, and felt both so intimidated and so proud to have such a successful cousin. She made me feel welcome and worthy - what a generous spirit and a great role model. I am so grateful she could attend Corey's and my wedding, and that so many people thought she and Alexandra were also sisters of mine as they ran around helping with the mezethakia. It was my great fortune to know her.

Dear Mitzi, Brian and Family,

My heart goes out to you as we remember Christine and mourn her passing. I had the pleasure of working with Christine for many years at the Hotel School. As a former colleague and Hotelie, I admire Christine for her professionalism, her abundant interest and compassion for others, her finesse and her ability to negotiate and embrace a big wonderful and diverse world in all its complexity.

May memories of wonderful times together help you through this difficult time. We shall miss, but not forget Christine.

Sincerely,

Brad Walp
