Newhart, William James
William James Newhart, best known as Jim, of Moravia, NY passed away unexpectedly Thursday November 21, 2013 at the age of 74. He had been admitted to Cayuga Medical Center, Ithaca, NY and passed after a brief illness surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born at home on December 31, 1938 in Moravia, a son of the late Calvin James & Mary Ella Newhart and had lived in Moravia all of his life. As a young boy Jim worked a number of odd jobs including working as a farmhand and setting pins at the local bowling alley. After graduating from Moravia High School, Class of 1956, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served 4 years before being honourably discharged. He then returned to Moravia in 1960 where he met Marjorie Keagle on New Year's Eve (his 22nd birthday) and later married her in October of 1961. Upon returning to Moravia after his hitch in the Navy, Jim was employed for a number of years at the Moravia Republican Register where he worked for G.W. Fickeisen. He also served a number of terms as the Moravia Town Clerk. Following that, Jim began an approximate 30 year career with UPSCO, Inc. In Moravia. He began his time there working in the shop and later moved to office administration and development. He eventually became part owner of the company with Jim Bean of Skaneatles, NY. During his time at UPSCO, he developed several products that are now patented. Following his retirement from UPSCO Jim started Granny's, LLC. Granny's purchased several area buildings in which businesses could be started and built to increase the good & economy of the area. His good heart had given many people a chance to become successful with starting their own businesses. During that time, the Moravia Fire Dept. Was in need of equipment and Jim came forward with his generous support to assist in purchasing a fire truck. Jim spent his final years of employment as owner/operator of Granny's Gas & Goodies on Main St., Moravia where he could often be seen sitting at the picnic table outside visiting with local residents or reading the paper. While operating Granny's Gas & Goodies Jim felt it was important to keep Moravia looking good by hanging and regularly watering white petunias on the street lights of Main St. Jim was a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church, Moravia. He had also been a member of the Rotary Club and Freemasons in Moravia and the founding member of the Owasco Lake Liar's Club. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; son, Jeffrey (Margaret) all of Moravia; daughter, Jennifer Eakins of Locke; sister, Nancy Baker/Hagin of Moravia; brother, David (Sharon) Newhart of Fredrick, MD; grandchildren, Logan and Noah Newhart, Braden and Haleigh Eakins and several nieces & nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 2PM, Saturday, November 30, 2013 at St. Matthews Church, Church St., Moravia. There are no calling hours. A reception will follow at the Church Parish House. If you have a picture you would like to share of Jim, please bring it to the reception. Memorial contributions can be made to Four Town First Aid Squad or St. Matthews Church Building Fund.
