Ensign, Donald Harold
Donald Harold Ensign, age 90, formerly of Bradshaw Road, Dryden, NY passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at the NYS Veterans' Home in Oxford, NY. Don was born in Cortland on December 20, 1922 and was the only child of Dr. Harold Ensign, DDS and Lena Stevens Ensign. He was graduated from Dryden High School in 1941 and served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946 aboard the USS George W. Ingram, DE 62. He was a Past Commander of the Leonard T. Spaulding Post 1134, American Legion and a past Tompkins County Commander and a Past Commander of the Dryden Township Post 8158, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was one of the original members of the Dryden Veterans Memorial Home Ritual Team. Don was employed for many years as the Parts Manager at Dates Chevrolet-Olds and later was the property manager at the Dryden Veterans Memorial Home. Don was a member of The First Presbyterian Church of Dryden; the Destroyer Escort Sailor's Association; The Lansing Rod and Gun Club and the NRA. Don enjoyed NASCAR and target shooting. Survivors include his sons, David (Linda) Ensign of Salisbury, NC, Eric of Reno NV and John Ensign of Walnut Creek, CA; his daughter, Jennifer (Douglas) Perine of Cortland; grandchildren, Sara Ensign, Susie (Matt) Jackson, Rachel Perine, Ashley Ensign; great-grandchildren, T.J. Oseid, Ainsley and Zack Jackson and many extended family members. He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara Humphrey Ensign. Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM, Monday, October 7 at the Perkins Funeral Home with Rev. David C. Robinson officiating. Burial will be private in McGraw Rural Cemetery where military honors will be provided by members of the Dryden Veterans Memorial Home Ritual Team. Friends are invited to call from 10 to 11 AM, Monday at the funeral home, 55 West Main St, Dryden. Memorials are directed to the Dryden Veterans Memorial Home, DVMH, 2262 Dryden Road, Dryden, NY 13053 or to the SPCA of Cortland Co., 879 McLean Road, Cortland, NY 13045.
