My prayers are with the family and friends of Matthew Williams. Stay strong. I heard of these tragic events today on the news all the way here in Maine and me being born and raised in Lakeland made me so sad for the whole city!

I was a former Polk County Sheriff's Deputy/Detective from 1995-2005. I had the honor of working with Matt for several years on the Southwest District Alpha shift when he was that shift's assigned K-9 unit. When on shift together I had the opportunity to spend alot of time with Matt. I worked what was then Sector Romeo (Combee Rd area) where Matt loved to play. I learned alot about Matt during that time. Since hearing the news today, I have spent all day thinking back on those times we spent on duty together. I remember many times when the day was slow and we had time to park and talk. We both talked about our families. My wife who is a detective for P.C.S.O. and I had just had our daughter. Matt and I would spend time talking about his wife and children. At that time my wife and I were newly married and just had our daughter. He would give me, the newby husband and father some advise on how not to screw up. And you know I really listened to him. What I admired about Matt the most was Matt was Matt. He was a simple man with good values. What you see is what you get with Matt. He was truely a family man who also took great pride in being a deputy and loved being a K-9 deputy. He was always busting his butt to get there first when another deputy needed help. It doesn't surprise me one bit that he was first on scene this time. That was Matt, always there to help and never expected anything in return. You never want to see any deputy or officer taken this way but you wonder when it happens, WHY? WHY, someone like Matt? If ever it was true that only the good die young, that is surely the case this time. Matt was truely one of the good guys. I don't know of anybody who didn't like Matt. That is the truth. He never gave you a reason not to like him. As long as you did what was right, you were alright in his eyes. To his wife and children: Your husband and father is and always will be a great man. And I can truely say that I do know how much he loves you all because he told me many times, how he felt about you!

Matt, until we meet again you will be truely missed,

MY heart was broken when I heard the news about Matt and his partner. I had the great honor of working with Matt from his first days on the job in Central Region until I left the agency in 1998. All of his brothers and sisters from Broward County are praying for Matt's family and will mourn his loss. Matt was a great zone partner and a wonderful man, husband and father.
