Gregory J. MacDonald
SOMERSET, MI: Gregory J. MacDonald, 64 years of age, a resident of Somerset, Michigan, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 27, 2013, following his journey with cancer.
He was born May 8, 1949, in Lima, Ohio and graduated from Leipsic High School, Leipsic, Ohio, in 1967. He was a gifted athlete in most sports, and is particularly remembered for his ability in slow pitch softball for both the Eagles in Leipsic and church softball teams. He graduated from the University of Findlay with a degree in Accounting and while there, played football, ran track and participated in many intramural sports.
After graduating from college, he began his professional career at Marathon Products in Bowling Green, Ohio and spent the next 30 years working for Whirlpool. He worked in the Findlay and Clyde, Ohio locations, Laundry Group and his last 20 years at Whirlpool's Corporate Headquarters in Benton Harbor, Michigan. With work related moves over the years, he has been active in many churches including: Leipsic UMC, The First Church of God in St. Joseph, Michigan, Fremont Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Fremont, OH, Baroda Church of God in Baroda, MI, The Chapel of the Lakes in Angola, IN and New Jerusalem Christian Fellowship in Somerset, MI, where he is currently a member. He has held many positions at the various churches, such as Youth Advisor, Sunday School Teacher, Bible Study Leader, Elder, and Church Treasurer. His involvement in DeColores (a non denominational Christian weekend) included: team member, board member and rector. Greg enjoyed the Whirlpool and the Brooklyn Seniors golf leagues. He also enjoyed his yearly hunting trips with family members.
Greg loved his Lord and loved his family who was extremely important to him. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and a true inspiration to many.
Survivors include: his loving wife of 41 years, Kathryn (Blessing) MacDonald; son, Scott (Carly) MacDonald of Indianapolis, IN, daughter, Melanie (Christopher) Fox of Grand Rapids, MI; grandchildren include: Jackson MacDonald, Lincoln & Segen Fox; also surviving is Gregory's mother, Janet MacDonald of Leipsic, Ohio; brother, Paul (Karen) MacDonald of Wauseon, Ohio, and brother, Randy (Kathy) MacDonald of Defiance, Ohio.
His father Richard MacDonald, preceded him in death.
Visitation will be at New Jerusalem Christian Fellowship, 14977 Harper Road, Somerset, Michigan, from 2-4 and 6-8, Saturday, June 29, 2013. A Celebration Service will be Sunday, June 30, 2013, at 3 p.m. at New Jerusalem Church in Somerset, Michigan, and a Memorial Service will be held on Monday, July 1, 2013, at Leipsic United Methodist Church at 12 Noon in Leipsic, Ohio.
The family suggests that Donations may be made to Hope Lodge, 129 Jefferson Avenue SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.
