Lucy McGrady
FREMONT: Lucy I. McGrady, 92, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 2, 2013 at Stein Hospice in Sandusky, Ohio. She was born on December 13, 1920 to George and Mary Catherine Nigro in Bellevue, OH.
She was a 1941 graduate of Bellevue High School. Since five of her six brothers were serving in the armed forces during WW II, Lucy, along with her sister Millie, moved to Pennsylvania to help with the war effort. She was employed as a Radio Technician and, as such, she checked hundreds of planes that were on their way to the war zone. It was a job she was very proud of.
After the war, she was employed at Philco Corp. in Sandusky. She met her future husband at Rainbow Gardens and they were married on April 12, 1947. After staying home for a while to raise her children, Lucy was employed at Memorial Hospital, first as a surgical aide, then as a ward clerk. She enjoyed working with people and doing what she could to offer comfort to patients. This served her well in later years when she worked as Hostess at Bud & Brutus Chinese restaurant, co-owned by her husband.
After retirement, Lucy and Jim operated the first Bed & Breakfast in Fremont, located across from Spiegel Grove. Lucy enjoyed meeting the many interesting guests and made everyone feel welcome and at home.
Lucy was a charter member of Sacred Heart Parish and belonged to the Altar Rosary Society.
She loved to go out dancing, attending the concerts in Birchard Park, "cruising down the river on a Sunday afternoon", and watching the antics of the various cats and dogs she mothered over the years. However, one of her very favorite pastimes was watching football; the teams she followed avidly were the Greenbay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Notre Dame, and of course, Ohio State.
Lucy was preceded in death by her infant children, Daniel, Sharon, James, and Lucy; her parents; her brothers Daniel, Dominic, Joseph, George, Robert, and John Nigro; and sisters Carmella Henderson and Angeline Franks.
Surviving are her loving husband of 66 years, James; her children Terry (Barbara) McGrady, Fremont and Cecilia (George) Brochu, Lewis Center, OH; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, aides, and volunteers from Stein Hospice who provided comfort to Lucy in her final weeks.
A funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church on Saturday, August 10, at 10:30.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA), PO Box 1047, Fremont, OH 43420.

Jim, Cecilia and Terry, sorry I lost touch with you and your family over the years. It is so sad to hear of Lucy's death. It brings to mind my life in Fremont and the times I spent with you Cecilia at your home. Your mom was bubbly and such a loving mate to your dad. With the passing of my parents and now your mom, memories wash over me of our wonderful, innocent lives when we were kids and the blessing of having great, loving parents. Peace, Rosanne Fyffe (Ziebold)

My sincere sympathy to Jim and family. Jim was my mother's first cousin and Lucy a very special person. I did not know her long history of loving and helping people. She was quiet and humble and a beautiful lady. My prayers go out to her children, and special prayers to Jim. God bless.
