Robert "Buckley" Carlin, 78, of Elizabethtown, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2014, at his home in Elizabethtown.
Buckley was born April 5, 1936, in Owensboro and graduated from Glendale High School in 1954 where he was an Honorable Mention All-State basketball player. He graduated from Georgetown College in Georgetown in 1958 and then was honored as a
Distinguished Graduate there in 1988. Buckley then went on and graduated from Ohio State University in 1960, receiving his MSW and his ACSW from there. He directed several units for Franklin County Children's Services from 1960-1963, was the treatment director for the Methodist Children's Home in Worthington, Ohio, from 1963-1980, and was honored by the state of Ohio for Lifetime
Achievement and Outstanding Service to Ohio Children and Youth in 1996.
He was director of the GlenDale Baptist Children's Home from 1980-1999, where he was a resident from 1949-1954. Buckley also was an assistant to the president of Kentucky Baptist Homes for Children until retirement.
He was an adjunct professor at Elizabethtown Community College and Lindsey Wilson College, commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel in 1987, served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and director in a number of churches and was a member of the Severns Valley Baptist Church.
He was a lifetime member of Columbus All Bred Training Club in Columbus, Ohio, and he loved training dogs and he was a member of the Mid Kentucky Kennel Club. Buckley loved to be outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping.
He was preceded in death by his Parents, Abraham B. and Virgie L. Berry Carlin.
Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Viora Sue Carlin of Elizabethtown; three children whom he loved dearly, Marquis Buckley Carlin and his wife, Gail, of Vine Grove, Viora Beth Gallagher and her husband, Terry, of Westerville, Ohio, and Jodi S. Martin and her husband, Glenn, of Columbia; a brother, Bluford B. Carlin of Phonix, Arizona; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Buckley was on a quest to love and help people. He believed that everybody needs to love, be loved and to feel worthwhile to themselves and others. He has left this legacy for his family to continue. (Ephesians 6:10-18)
A Celebration of Life for Buckley is at 3 p.m. Sunday at Severns Valley Baptist Church in Elizabethtown, with the Rev. Don Watson, the Rev. Bill Langley and the Rev. Norman Lytle officiating. Burial follows Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Manakee Funeral home in Elizabethtown and continues from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Robert carlin was a great man , he was a big part of my life growing up and helped me grow up to be the person I am , without his leadership I don't know where I would be today , he helped so many people around him, I was truly blessed to have him and his family in my life at such a tough time, I always looked up to him and his wife , mrs carlin and they played a huge role in the way I look at life and live my life today. Mr. Carlin was an encourager to so many kids at GlenDale as well as to the staff. I am blessed to have known and worked with him.

I can't began to tell you how sorry I am about the passing of Mr. Carlin. Just know that he is now resting. No more suffering no more pain. Just trust and lean on God for he is the only one that can see you through this. I pray that God will continue to give you comfort and peace for such a time as this. I greatly respected Bro. Carlin for his work at Glendale in the 1980s & 90s. His life story was an inspiration to me at that time and provided hope for each child residing there. My mother served on their auxiliary and always spoke highly of him. May God comfort each of you with His love.
