HI! My name is Ruth Berklich. I rented the apartment in Mr. Chuey's home for several years when I was single as Ruth Kushner, about 20 years ago! The Chuey's were very kind, and to keep me as a tenant, they never raised my rent all 3-4 years! I did not know that Don had passed until I noticed that the Lake Orion house had been sold, so I drove by to say goodbye.

God bless your family! You were there for me, and I will always be grateful!

Mr. Chuey was my math teacher at Pontiac Northern. Math was not my best subject, but Mr. Chuey was patient with me and funny, and he made sure I made it through the class. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

It's sad to hear of Don's passing. He was a fascinating character and I enjoyed the many times I visited the lake house.

Many may not know of the incident in which Don became a machete-wielding man running through the concourse of Detroit Metro Airport.

In the early summer of 1980 I rode my motorcycle from Arizona back to my home town of Lake Orion. For personal protection (not that I ever needed it, and I've long since ceased worrying about such things), I'd packed a machete into my saddlebag.

When I returned to Arizona in the fall, I forgot to bring the machete. So I called Don's son Paul, who was my roommate at Arizona State, and asked if he could bring it when he came back to Tempe.

Paul packed the bolo in his luggage, but when he got to the metal detector airport security politely suggested that he not bring it on the plane.

So Paul handed the giant blade to Don...who then carried it while running back through the terminal because his car was at risk of being towed.

I never did see that machete again.

Rest in peace, Don.
