We exchanged letters a few years back but I just searched Fr. Talkin's name now and learned of his passing. He was the best teacher I had at Loyola, funny, engaging and challenging. I remember the record-breaking speed of his mass at St. Francis, and the nursing home where he volunteered and brought students. He didn't pretend to be color-blind, but instead celebrated the diversity of our class, asking people about their heritage and where they were from. He jokingly called me Ms. NOW because I was always questioning the treatment of women in the Old Testament. I often brought him questions, during my four years at Loyola, and when I last saw him, at the Jesuit Residence with my fiance (also a student of his) in 1994. So grateful to have known him, and sad that I can't ask him more questions now.

Father Talkin taught me freshman Theology at Loyola University in 1961-62. He was in the black cassock and was a great teacher. We became friends and we have been so ever since. In senior year, since we were friends of the Alpha Delts, he and I were inducted as honorary members. While visiting my brother, George, S.J., I saw him at Colombiere in early August and he told me that he was 90 and he seemed to be doing well. Since I was in ROTC in college, he liked that since he later became an Army chaplain. What a great Jesuit!

Fr. Talkin had a pronounced influence on my life. He guided me through Loyola University and is one of the two people who helped me through graduation. I so enjoyed our discussions in the dorm. I was disappointed he moved away from the Chicago area. I miss his quick wit. Thank you Father. I'm sorry we lost touch over the years. You are a credit to the priesthood and the Jesuits.
