You will be missed. Sorry to have just found out. To his family, I am sorry for your loss. I am sure he will have saved a place for all of his Friends and Family. Bless all who knew him.
It was people like you that saved my life. I don't know how to thank you but by forever reminding you: you will NEVER be forgotten!
A big thank you to Bernie's family for sharing him. I met Bernie 19 years ago at Park Royal when I was a security guard there. He took me under his wing and we became friends immediately. He was my mentor, friend, and father figure and I am extremely grateful that I was lucky enough to be where I was to chance upon this amazing man. Bernie, you are missed.
Ah Bernie if I could only relate some of the tales of walking the "skids" for you even for a short time. You were special and will be missed.
In fond memory of a great man on behalf of members of the BC Custom Car Association who owe much to Bernie and members of the Vancouver Police Department who assisted the car club in it's formative years during the 1950's and beyond.

Bernie Smith was a close friend to our family when I was just a child. The Pinto family with 12 children will never forget what he did for my mother before she died. He moved a mountain to get her home safely when she was dying from cancer. His legacy of love left us forever greatful. He was like an uncle to us. Our hearts greave both with and for his family.
Thank you Bernie for your wonderful sense of humour and your unique way of making people feel special. We will all miss you very much.
Our sincere condolences to the Smith Family. Arriving in BC in 1961 our family got to know Bernie and Mary as we lived on Smith at Kincaid court, just up the street from their home. Our parents had many wonderful times with the Smith family. Bernie and Mary will be together again in heaven and continuing to be providing laughter and comfort to those around them.

As a member of the now defunct "Stride Inside" walking club at Park Royal I wrote this poem for Bernie in 1997 when he retired as head of security.
"In seventy years, plus five, we know
You've gathered many a friend.
You've moved in lofty circles, pal,
On you they did depend.
And now you're moving yet again
We'll miss you when you've gone.
We, too, have come to count upon
Your wit, your charm and song.
"There's Bernie" some of us will say
As whistling fills the mall.
So we who STRIDE INSIDE do hop
You'll not forget us all!"
My Dear Great Uncle Bernie,
It was a joy and a pleasure to call you family. We will always remember the stories, the whistling and never being able to leave you house after a visit without some special treasure dug up from your basement.
A true legend. You were thought of often by us and will continue to be remmberd.
With our unconditional love, always....
I was saddened to hear of Bernie's passing, I have missed the "family" get togethers that I was a part of. Even though our lives took different paths I think of you all often and wished that I could have been in touch. Bernie played an instrumental part of my life for many years and will be surely missed by everyone who knew and loved him. My heartfelt prayers are with you all.
I met Bernie Smith at Bob James funeral last year, (another old time vp police officer) he got up and sang the song and spoke so eloquently about his fellow police officer Bob. You could see the similarity in their generation. The frank ,direct no mincing words and a sprinkling of humour , but delivered in a respectful way.I watched the NFB film about "whistling smith" and was really moved and touched by the realness of the man and what an excellent speaking voice!. We are going to miss this generation as they pass on. My condolences to the family.
He was a special man and will be missed.

I will treasure the memories of seeing Bernie at our family banquet dinners in Chinatown. Bernie will always hold a special spot in my heart. I still look for you in DTES....

How wonderfull it was to grow up on Kincaid Street with the love and support of family and neighbours and how great it was to have our very own whistling policeman to keep us in line. Mr Smith will be missed. Our condolences to the family.
you are a shining example of what one can do when serving ones fellow man. Myself, the "new" men of Yorke Island, and the countless folks who visit the island will benefit from every tale, fact, and photo you gave. Your time amongst has ended but you will continue to serve, as I know you are willing to do.
You will be happy to know "short arms" inspections start next summer. Haha.
-Holding my "Victory" nickel with the utmost pride, Ross Keller
Our condolences to all of you. He was a great man. Kincaid Street will never be the same.
