I met Van Cliburn at a Piggly Wiggly supermarket in Schreveport on Christmas Eve in about 1973. He was shopping; selecting fruits and vegetables, putting them in a plastic bag which he placed in his shopping cart. I remember when I spoke with him..."Are you Van Cliburn?", he was gracious, modest, kind, and spoke with a sense of humor. Thank you Mr. Cliburn for this wonderful memory. Rest In Peace.

It was such an honor to work with you in the 1980s, during the 7th Competition that bears your name. You were not only a legendary talent, but you were also a true gentleman, and a most gracious man. It was a privilege to have known you. May you rest in peace, and know that you will never be forgotten.

Be careful of the piece you choose to play, as you will play it for the rest of your life. I am not sure whether or not his mother told him this in the book on Van Cliburn's life.
