Stanley Namowicz Obituary

STANLEY NAMOWICZ, SR. Stanley P. Namowicz, Sr., age 90, of Lansdale, died Friday, December 23, 2011, at Abington Health Lansdale Hospital. He was the beloved husband of 63 years of Regina A. Namowicz who died in August of 2010. Born in Nanticoke, he was the son of the late Peter and Sophia Namowicz. Mr. Namowicz was a longtime member of St. Stanislaus Church. He was in the 99th Infantry Division of the United States Army during World War II which was trained at Camp Van Dom, Mississippi. He was in the Checkerboard Division and on December 16, 1944 fought in the famous Battle of the Bulge. The Checkerboard Division is known for their emblem of a black shield which represents the Iron District of Pennsylvania and the checkerboard design from the coat of arms of William Pitt. In his early years he worked as a coal miner. He later worked at Graterford Prison as a guard retiring in 1979. Surviving are his son, Stanley P. Namowicz, Jr. and his wife, Susan, of New Bern, NC; a daughter, Bernadine Quirke and her husband, Ed, of Largo, FL; as well as four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass Friday Dec. 30, at 9AM at St. Stanislaus Church, 51 Lansdale Ave., Lansdale, where the family will receive friends from 8 to 9AM Friday morning in the church prior to Mass. Interment will be in Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown. Arrangements are by Simcox-McIlvaine Funeral Home, Lansdale.

Sue, Stan and family,
So sorry to hear of your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. When I read the obituary to my husband he told me some of the history of the Checkerboard Division .....quite interesting and something to be proud of.
