Don Franklin Mowry of Rolla, Missouri passed away Saturday, April 9, 2016 at the St. James Veterans home in St. James, Missouri at the age of 94. Don was born in Princeton, Indiana on September 25, 1921 to the late William and Eva (Meeker) Mowry.
Don graduated from Princeton High School and joined the Army in 1939. While he was fighting in World War II, Don was trapped with the 101st Airborne in Bastogne. When he returned stateside he was stationed in Fort Leonard Wood Missouri. That is where he met the love of his life Mildred (Mickey) Tyler. They were married on August 7, 1943. This union was blessed with two sons. He retired from the Army in 1962 as Lieutenant Colonel and opened his own Phillip 66 gas station in Missouri. He worked at the gas station for many years before selling it and going to work at the Rolla Post Office where he officially retired from. Don enjoyed writing poetry, mushroom hunting, playing cards, watching western movies, and spending time with his wife of 71 years before her death in December of 2014. He was a member of the Greentree Christian Church and Commander of the VFW post 2025. He will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him.
Don Franklin Mowry is survived by his sons, Don (Georgia) Mowry of Rolla, MO and Mike (Nikki) Mowry of Doolittle, MO; sister, Jo Watt of Naples, FL; grandchildren, Brian (Kelli) Mowry, Tonya Jones and Michael Wayne (Anita) Nickels; great grandchildren, Shelby, Gabe, Amanda, Anna, Sarah, Evan and Ayrus; a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. In addition to his parents and wife, Don was preceded in death by three brothers, Bill, Claude and Kenneth Mowry; five sisters, Jean, Lois, Hazel, Grace and Dorothy; great grandson, Rayce Mowry.
Funeral services for Don Franklin Mowry will be held at 1:00PM on Thursday, April 14, 2016 at the Rolla Chapel of the James & Gahr Mortuary with Pastor Tim Cook officiating. A visitation for family and friends will be held at the Rolla Chapel of the James & Gahr Mortuary on Thursday, April 14, 2016 from 11:00AM until service time at 1:00PM. Interment will be held at the North Lawn Cemetery Mausoleum. Memorials are suggested to the Barnes Jewish Children's Cancer Hospital.
