Anthony Harper Obituary

With deep sadness we announce the death of Anthony Harper formerly of Bermuda. Born December 6th 1938 at Batu Gajah Malaysia while his Father was serving with the British Colonial Police. Tony joined the Bermuda Police in 1960. As a gentle and shy character perhaps not the most suited to a policeman, he increasingly turned his attention towards athletics. Success came quickly and he represented Bermuda in 400m hurdles at Intnational level in the Commonwealth Games and the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. Tony then took up teaching at Warwick Academy and then at Cedar Grove School as well as remaining an enthusiastic sailor. A later move to the UK he took up a teaching job in Surrey. Upon retirement he spent time in Portugal painting and settled in Martock Somerset. He died on April 17th after an extended illness and will be greatly missed by Angela his wife of over 40 years, and his two children Iain and Michael.

A really lovely guy. We taught him how to kick a ball (properly) and he taught us how to hurdle (properly). Loughborough College UK 1966-69.

To the Harper Family.
I first met Tony during the early sixties when we participated in the Friday night Track and Field meets that were held at the B.A.A. field.
He was a good friend.
Condolences to all the family.

Mr Harper was one of my favourite teachers at Warwick Academy. He was fair and kind and just a natural teacher. We respected him a great deal. I am sorry for your loss

To the Harper family..
I am deeply saddened by the news. Tony was an outstanding track and field athlete. I watched him try to qualify for the Olympics while training with D.J. Williams on the grass police field at Prospect. In later years he helped me coach tennis to juniors at summer clinics at Coral Beach and Tennis Club. He had a natural gift teaching young people.
We have lost a fine athlete and a true gentleman.

To the Harper Family,

Tony was my teammate on the Bermuda squad at the 1966 Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica. He was a fierce competitor and a gentle man off the track. May you find peace during your loss.
