Arts organisations go up and down.

Joe Beddoe had an outstanding ability to launch and sustain the up' and to arrest and revitalise the down' whether the gound-breaking foundation of the Afro-Caribbean Factory (1977) or the 1980s expansion of the Royal Court's reach to the West end and Broadway or the rescue of 7:84 (Scotland) and the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow only a snapshot of the many ventures which benefited from her creative energy and vision in London, Liverpool, Manchester and New York.

I last met her at a crucial stage (2000) in the development of The Bernie Grant Centre where her deep experience and drive set the project on its road to successful opening.

Clearsighted, and robust, but with a ready capacity for humour in crisis a sad loss.

Enormously sad to hear of Jo's death. I knew her during her time at the Arts Council of Great Britain, and then sadly lost touch. But once met, never forgotten: her warmth, gigantic enthusiasm and energy. Much missed.
