To the family and friends of Dr. Frank Yat-Wai Yung
Frank and I met somewhere between the year 1998 and 2000, at a lecture I was giving for a company then called Ceram Optec on the 980nm diode laser. In my feeble old age the years seem to blend together but it was somewhere around then. We were initially laser dentistry colleagues but quickly became friends. Frank proved to be one of the most unique individuals that I have had the pleasure of meeting. I am proud to have known him and proud to have been able to call him friend, but when I think of Frank another term also comes to mind and that is hero. The dictionary definition of hero is: 1. a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities, and 2. a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal: as in “ He was a local hero when he saved the drowning child.” Frank fills these definitions and more. Unfortunately young people today think of heroes most often as individuals who are good with a puck or a ball. A hero is much more than that however. Let me try and list Frank's positive attributes. Let's go alphabetically starting with: affable, amenable, amiable, assiduous, achiever, alert, ambitious, aspiring, benevolent, bright, brilliant, brave, boundless, capable, charming, cheerful, coherent, confident, cooperative, courageous, credible, cultured, caring, charitable, considerate, courteous, etc etc. I think I have accomplished my goal that to completely alphabetize, his positive attributes would take innumerable pages. Let me just say Frank was MY hero. He was the kindest, most polite, most humble gentleman I have ever had the opportunity to know and he was a true humanitarian. His erudite knowledge and wisdom eclipsed that of the finest Rhode scholars. His laser knowledge was unsurpassed. Frank left us at much too young of an age but those whose lives he touched will never forget Dr. Frank Yat-Wai Yung a true hero.
Like the words of the song:
Did you ever know that you're my hero? You're everything I wish I could be.
Thank you, thank you, thank God for you, the wind beneath my wings.
