Sometimes we waltz through life with joyful abandon, and sometimes we find ourselves in tears in the middle of the day. Paddy would appreciate and applaud both, and call it life, learn from it. One of my favourite University lecturers of all time, passionate, formative, beloved. We had that coffee, but never got to that wee dram of Uisce Beatha. I will tip one to your memory. Farewell Paddy, you made the world a better place.

The best and most memorable of all my teachers. He created a unique and safe space for finding the pinnacle of our creativity, while managing to prepare us for a University education by in essence giving us one. He always remembered me when I happened across him,and it has been 30 years since I was his student. He was a remarkable and vital human, funny and kind and jolly and so very intelligent. He did not seem to hold my faults against me, and I wanted to work hard, to succeed in his class because it was so challenging and interesting and I hated to disappoint him when he gave so much to all of us. He was a champion of Canadian literature and poetry and a grand orator. I am honoured to have been given the chance to study with a teacher of such stature, and terribly sad that time and distance did not allow me to have one more conversation with my high school mentor.

I always enjoyed our conversations at the Saskatoon Teachers' Association School Representatives monthly meetings.

Paddy was only in our lives for a brief couple of years but was a thoroughly lovable character. His zest for life, his gift of the gab, and his thirst for a pint of the black stuff are remembered by us still. A true Irishman! Thistledown published the first book written by my wife, Bernice Friesen.

Paddy knew better than most that the tragedy of life lies not in how much we suffer but in how much we miss. Paddy didn't miss much. We have lost a great man.
