I only recently learned of COL Murray's passing as noted in the Americal Division Veterans' Association magazine. I had the honor of serving with COL Murray at Fort Jackson in 1971-72, after returning from Viet Nam.
He was a mentor, and as fine an officer and gentleman as ever I met in my time in the US Army.
I hope that his family and friends will be comforted by the evidence of the high esteem that COL Murray is held in, and the condolences of his fellow soldiers and friends, past and present. Rest in Peace COL, and God Bless you. A true American Hero.

It was my honor and distinct privilege to aide in laying to rest Col. Murray today. He was truly a brave man and real-life hero. There are not many times in my life where I have found it difficult to breathe due to being in the presence of such greatness. Today will be put on my list. It was obvious in today's service that he was not only respected, but a well-loved man. My condolences to those whose hearts are heavy today.
Respectfully,
1SG Scott A. Thomas

Through General Eugene Rogers, I was blessed to meet and get to know COL. Murray on several occasions. A more gentile gentleman I've never met. He like the other Medal of Honor recipients I've had the distinct honor of meeting, never saw himself as a hero. Thank you for gracing this Earth for 89 years. You will be sorely missed.

August 15, 2011
Col Murray has been a model of honor and integrity never seeking attention for himself. He was always gracious and kind to young soldiers at Fort Jackson as I dragged him from one group to group. They in turn responded most positively to him--these are young people who are in great need of interface with a hero of COL Murray's caliber. I will truly miss conversations with him, but consider myself forturnate that I too was given the opportunity to meet not only a genuine hero but an honorable man which is becoming rare in current society. I loved him and will miss his quiet prescence.
