James Franklin Burgin COLUMBIA - A graveside service for James Franklin Burgin, 79, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, March 26, 2014, at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the graveside. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Mr. Burgin passed away peacefully Friday, March 21, 2014. Born in Spindale, N.C., he was a son of the late Charles Burnice Burgin and Ethel Lee Davis Burgin. Mr. Burgin retired from the U.S. Army. He served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Broad River Masonic Lodge #377. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Betty Stanton Burgin; daughter, Rebecca B. Freeman (Richard) of Spring Hope, N.C.; grandchildren, Christopher Ryan Freeman (Kaitlyn) of Raleigh, N.C., Victoria Leigh Burgin of Fla.; brother, Walter Dean Burgin of Charlotte, N.C.; sister, Lillian Vera Scott of Charlotte, N.C.; and many extended family members. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, John Wesley Burgin; sister, Rosa Lee B. Fincannon; and brother, Jennings Burgin. Jim was an awesome salesman, teacher & leader. He is totally responsible for my Real Estate Career of 38 years. He always encouraged me in all aspects, to include opening my own business. I only hope that I made him proud! My deepest sympathies to all of his family.

Uncle Jim was the father figure that I craved growing up. He will always have a very special place in my heart and I will miss him so much as will Aunt Betty and Rebecca. My love to you Uncle Jim, and my prayers for Aunt Betty and Rebecca. God Bless each of you!

Uncle Jim was a very caring person.He was always helping some member of the community. He was loved very much by meand Levi.
