Joyce Gwendolyn Fauntleroy COLUMBIA - Joyce Gwendolyn Fauntleroy was called to eternal rest on Monday, September 24, 2012 at Palmetto Richland Hospital in Columbia, SC. A Requiem Mass will be held on Friday, September 28, 2012 at 11:00a.m. at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 1512 Blanding Street, Columbia, SC, 29201. The Rev. Dr. James F. Lyon, IV, S.S.C. will be Celebrant. A reception will follow in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of your choice. Joyce was born May 1, 1943 in Jersey City, New Jersey to Coley and Corine Williams (deceased). She attended Jersey City schools and graduated from Lincoln High School. In high school she participated as a majorette and loved twirling her baton. She met and later married her husband Chris in 1986. After graduation, Joyce began working at Bell Telephone Laboratories in New York City as a typist and stenographer. When Bell Telephone Laboratories left New York City, Joyce then worked for the New York Telephone Company and later for Union Caberine. Joyce wanted more for herself so she decided to attend Jersey City State Teachers College (New Jersey University) to receive a degree in education (special education). She taught and later became an administrator at Passaic City Technical Institute in Wayne, New Jersey. When Joyce retired, she and her husband, Chris relocated to Columbia, SC. Joyce was a faithful member at Grace Church-Newark (Episcopal) where lived in New Jersey and continued her devout faithfulness at the Church of the Good Shepherd (Episcopal) in Columbia, SC. Joyce worked with Episcopal Church Women and was a lectors and Eucharistic Minister. She was also President-elect of the Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina. Joyce also worked for President Obama's Presidential Election in 2008 and volunteered to read to fifth graders at a neighboring school. She loved puttering around in the yard, planting flowers and mowing the grass. She exercised twice a week and walked CJ, their boxer every morning. Joyce couldn't stay still, she was always doing something. Joyce is survived by her husband, Chris; sister, Ann (Howard), two brothers, Charles and Edward (Vanessa); stepdaughter, Naiina F. Levell; god-children, Sawie Blamasah, Howard Smith, Jr., Yahmese Smith; a host of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, and aunt-in-law, cousins, and friends. Joyce was re-ceased by her parents and brother, Coley. The family wishes to thank everyone for your prayers, cards, visits, and other acts of kindness during Joyce's illness and now our time of bereavement. A mass with entombment will be held at a later date at Grace Church in Newark, New Jersey. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.bosticktompkinsinc.com

I was saddened to hear of her passing. When I last spoke to her she seemed to be the bubbly person that I knew. She was strong and determined. She is in God's hands now and at rest. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

To: Chris and Joyce's family, please accept my sincerest sympathy. I am so fortunate to have known Joyce. She is the reason that I became a member of the Chruch of Good Shepherd (Columbia, SC). Joyce was a faithful "minister" of Good Shepherd and brought so many wonderful programs to the church. She just saw what needed to be done at the church and did it. She will certainly be missed.
I spent many hours with Joyce at different soical events and at their home(beautiful). Being new to Columbia, she took the time to show me around Columbia and introduce me to some of the cultural events which we enjoyed together.
She drove from SC to to my surprise birthay party in Washington, DC in December 2011 and I truly apprecaited her efforts and enjoyed spending the time with her then as well.
I will miss Joyce but I know that she is gone home to be with her Lord. Good night my friend.
Best,
Pearl
