Mildred Overton Obituary

Mildred Varner Overton CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Mildred Varner Overton, 97, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at Carolina Meadows Tuesday, August 19, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, John Hane Overton, former principal of Hand Junior High School in Columbia, South Carolina. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Ethel Gollahon Lovelady, Clay Bryan Varner, and Coke Charles Lovelady; brothers Claude Bryan Varner, Jr. (Ramelle), Horace Lovelady (Model), Merrill Lovelady (Mamie), Glen Lovelady (Margaret); sisters Venice Lovelady and Sarah Lovelady; nephew Charles Coke Lovelady; son-in-law Samuel Thorne Patterson, Jr., and grandson Robert Michael Overton of Hillsborough, North Carolina. Mildred is survived by her son Dr. John Hane Overton, Jr., and his wife Ann Keller Overton of Durham, NC, and her daughter Katherine Overton Patterson of Petersburg, VA; grandson Edward Alan Overton (Abby Rosenson Overton); wife of Robert Overton, Kimberly Summey Overton; great granddaughters Natalie Brooke Overton, Kayleigh Michelle Overton, Marina Rose Overton, and Eve Aurora Overton; nephew James Lovelady of Myrtle Beach, and all the staff at Carolina Meadows, particularly the caring and loving family of the Pines. She is further survived by other relatives and many friends. Mrs. Overton attended St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Durham, NC. In Columbia, SC she was an active member in St. John's Episcopal Church, serving as president of the Episcopal Church Women, Gill leader, visitor, Sunday School Teacher and Altar Gill. She was secretary for the State of South Carolina, a master of handwork, a ferocious reader, patriotic, a traveler, flower gardener and a mother. An Episcopal service will be held in the Board Room at Carolina Meadows on Saturday, August 23, at 11:00 am led by the Reverend Victoria Jamieson-Drake, priest of The Chapel of the Cross, Chapel Hill, NC. A graveside service will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Columbia, SC at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Mildred request donations be made to Paws4Ever, 6311 Nicks Road, Mebane, NC 27302, or an animal charity of your choice. Condolences may be made to Dr. John H. Overton, Jr, The Homestead, A305, 2600 Croasdaile Farm Parkway, Durham, NC 27705, or to Katherine O. Patterson, 1675 Berkeley Avenue, Petersburg, VA 23805.

Please know that your families are in our thoughts and prayers. Becky and I remember your dear mother and dad so vividly and remember the years of service they both gave to St. John's. They were both so very special.
