Thedis Jerome "T.J." Kirton BATESBURG - Thedis Jerome "T.J." Kirton was born August 2nd, 1935 in Georgetown County, SC to parents Joseph Steven Kirton and Hessie Lou Etheridge Kirton. He was educated in the Georgetown county school system. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served as a boiler technician 2nd class aboard the USS Gyatt DDG-1, the world's first guided missile destroyer. T.J. retired from Shakespeare Monofilament in Columbia, SC as a maintenance manager. T.J. is survived by wife, Margaret Frances Glenn Kirton of the home; Michael Glen Kirton of Chapin, SC; step-daughter, Patty Herd Sheffield (Steve) of Okatie, SC; grand-daughters, Emily Taylor Kirton and Madeline Glenn Kirton; brothers, Joe Kirton (Pam) of Pelion, SC; James Kirton (Jennie) and Charlie Kirton of Elgin, SC; sisters, Melda Morris and Katie Wheeler of Georgetown, SC, Lois Hall of Aiken, SC. T.J. is predeceased by a sister, Margaret Ann Kirton. A memorial service celebrating the life of T.J. Kirton will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, August 11, 2012 at Milton Shealy Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Dennis Metts and Rev. Gary Atkins. Visitation will be held from 12:30-1:30 P.M. Saturday, prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to: Palmetto Health Hospice, 1400 Pickens Street, Columbia, SC 29202. Milton Shealy Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

I have nothing but fond memories of Uncle TJ! I never saw him without a smile on his face, and his laugh was contagious. Thank you Uncle TJ for your service in the US Navy and for inspiring members of our Kirton family to also serve in the military protecting our precious freedom! I know that you are celebrating with your family in Heaven at this moment.
