Donald was a wonderful friend. He will be dearly missed by me and many others who were lucky enough to know him- either in person, or through his writing. His contributions professionally and personally were very often significant and moving. To speak with him was to gain a close confidant- and to be offered a glimpse of the world through his eyes- much as offered through his writing. He was important to the literary and motion picture landscapes of Japan and the United States- important in Tokyo, Hollywood, and New York- a talented scholar, artist and an intellectual leader- a true and valuable citizen of the world. The world will miss Donald Richie.

I read a few of his books while I was preparing to go to Japan. Thanks, Mr. Richie, for helping to open a new world for me.
