Joy Matteson Obituary

Joy Louise Matteson, 92, of Chinchilla, Pa., went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 14, at her daughter's home in Annapolis, Md. She was the beloved wife of Bernhardt Farischon Matteson, who went to the Lord in 1979.

Born in Ridgely, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Thomas Clyde Boswell and Lizzie Belle Argo Boswell. After graduation as Valedictorian from Ridgely High School, she worked at the Dept. of Public Health in Nashville, Tenn., then the American Red Cross at Dyersburg Army Base, where she met Sgt. Bernhardt (Matt) Matteson. They married at the end of WWII and moved to his hometown of Chinchilla, where she worked for the Welfare Council of Lackawanna County. After several years at home raising two daughters, Joy spent 15 years with the U.S. Post Office serving as Postmaster in Chinchilla for the two years prior to her retirement.

Joy had been an active member of Chinchilla United Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and was on various committees. She was a selfless, compassionate person who always put the needs of others before her own. Joy's greatest loves were the Lord, her husband and her family.

Surviving are two daughters, Susan and husband, Chris Wells, Jacksonville, Fla.; and Christine Matteson and husband, LTC (Ret.) Glenn McCarty, Annapolis, Md.; four grandchildren, Scott Matteson Fuller and wife, Kristy, Georgia; Christopher Fuller and wife, Becky, Connecticut; Matteson McCarty and wife, Caitlin, Oklahoma; Jameson McCarty and wife, Melissa, Maryland; four great-grandchildren, Jack Fuller, Aidan Fuller, John and Clara Joy McCarty; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by five sisters, Frances and husband, Nat Taylor; Faye and husband, Robin Pierce; Ernestine and husband, Joe Miller; Alice Boswell; and one brother, Thomas Boswell.

The family will receive friends Saturday, November 21 from noon-1:30 p.m. at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit, PA 18411, with a Celebration of Life service to begin at 1:30 p.m. Interment at Abington Hills Cemetery, S. Abington Twp., immediately afterward.

Memorial contributions may be made in Joy's memory to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 90 Ritchie Hwy., Pasadena, MD 21122; or to United Methodist Church of Chinchilla, 411 Layton Road, South Abington Twp., PA 18411.

We knew Joy as Chris' mother, as she spent her last years with Chris and Glenn. She was a godly woman with a great sense of humor! To know that she's with Jesus gives us such comfort. We love you, Chris & Glenn, and wish we could be with you tomorrow. We're praying for a wonderful celebration and time of praise as you continue the process of letting Joy go.

Joy was a very special friend and neighbor for many years. My husband, Jack, (who passed away on July 31st) and I used to enjoy chatting with Joy on her back porch in Chinchilla. It is a comfort to me now picturing Joy and Jack chatting in heaven with our Lord. My love and prayers go out to Sue, Chris and family. Jeanne Lewis

To the family of my beloved Joy,
Please accept my heartfelt condolences.
I cannot find words to express the deep sorrow I am feeling for the loss of this truly wonderful friend, my adopted mother.
I will cherish all the years we spent together; all the laughs; the stories about family & friends; and the close bonding we shared. My heart now has an empty space.
God bless you & keep you in His loving arms with Matt & all your loved ones.
Love & prayers to you all,
Barbara
